Hi!

I’d like to share with you with some thoughts about my latest EDC purchase. I’ve always been impressed with Wayne Goddard series of Spyderco. Of course I refer to the first series that was released a couple of years ago. Nice polished micarta, perfect satin finish and "old-style" look… is has always been a must_have_classic for me but I couldn't get one anywhere. And yesterdy I’ve found one (mid size) in an "airgun & military accesories" store in Netherlands near Amsterdam! Of course my decision was easy :)

I must say that I really like the touch of class and some special care you can find in this particular Spyderco. First of all, the pins and blade axle are mirror polished and create one smooth surface with the scales. Than the opening hole is nicely smoothed on the edges so it's really comfortable. The spine of the blade is slightly rounded just like the spine of Sebenza. And Wayne's signiture on the blade is nicely etched and left black inside. Of course I don’t even have to mention the smooooth action and flawless finish. It just fits my hand like a glove. OK, now bottom line – I’ve handled a lot of modern Spydercos: small Navigator, huge Military and a lot in between. But this Wayne Goddard is simply the nicest Spyderco I’ve EVER handled, period. And I really don’t understand why they discontinued this one after a short run some years ago. Now some illustrations for your pleasure:

I'd really like to see a re-release of the Goddard with micarta and a fully flat ground blade of either S30V or VG10. :D

I have one of those micarta Goddard's. It was my first Spyderco knife, and it's still one of my favourites. Too bad they stopped making it, but knives come and go.

Great pictures, PiterM. It's nice to see what your micarta Goddard folder looks like, and how mine looked at one time, all shiny and new, because mine is somewhat scratched up from use.

I don't have my Goddard with me right now, but I think that my version has a shiny silver pocket clip, as opposed to your black clip. And the serrations on your knife look a little different from mine, though that might be my imagination. I'll have to check on that later.

Thanks.

Hi PiterM. The Goddard was our most successful collaboration to date. We made the model for almost 10 years beginning with the Micarta version. We made a mid size and a small version. We made an FRN version that was used to introduce the barrelbolt reversible clip as well as the new steel (at the time) ATS-55.

The models were Papa Goddard (Serrarted and Combo edge), Goddard Jr( serrated and combo edge..Plain edge limited number of 500 through Mrs Goddard) and Baby Goddard (Combo egde only). All of these in Micarta.

Serrations on early models were low compared to the high serrations on today's Spydercos

This design made me the SPYDER HEAD I am today!!

The JD Smith C58BM is somewhat similar in handle finish and blade shape, only with more of a sharp clipped point. Might be easier to find one as I think they have only recently been discontinued. I love mine. :D

Sal, is there any plan to re-introduce these knives? Micarta Goddards are so nice that it would be really worth to put some of them to the market again I suppose. I'd buy two remaining sizes instantly! Yeah, I know... you have your plans... high-tech, new materials, new designs etc. But it is usually a great business to re-introduce a classic, even in a limited number - don't you think so?

Hi Piter. We have many new designs in the works. Re-introducing an older design requires little or no tooling costs, but thre is still the material and inventory costs of the model. Given a choice to spend our money on a new design or the remake of an older one, it is ususally more effective to create the new one.

If someone (distributor) wanted to purchase an entire run of the remake, then they would own the inventory and have an exclusive on the model. This would be more of a possibility.

If we were to do it, we would have to change the material or design to distinguish it from the original or it loses its "remake" value.

I love the Wayne Goddard. With S30V, Micarta handle, and NO serrations, it would be a keeper for me.

The Goddard is one of my fave designs for sure. The only thing I didn't like about the micarta Goddard is that the action was jerky and never seemed to smooth out. But the blade shape, handle shape, aesthetics, all were fantastic.

I noticed a few weeks ago that one of the on line stores that I regularly browse has the Micarta handle, large, combo edge model in stock. I'm not associated with the store in any way, but I've never been real clear on the forum rules about posting this kind of information. Just to avoid problems, if anyone is interested, fire me off an email and I'll send you the link.

Well... IMHO this one is the smoothest of all back-lock Spydercos (and other brands) that I've ever had in my hand. The only exception would Police CF which is smoother I have to admit. I'll try to make a movie during weekend to show how smooth the blade rides... anyway, it's a great knife.

Happy to hear that you scored one of these! They're quickly becoming a 'cult' item in the GIN-1 steel! Just picked up another one, NIB through A. G. Russell's 'Cutting Edge' catalog, got it in the mail Saturday...

Now, having 3 in 50/50...I may put an unused one up for sale soon @ $100.

Enjoy PiterM, you scored a great knife!

Mel

Congatulations on your new fine knife. I always liked Wayne Goddard's style. Does it have steel liners or it's just plain Micarta?

Hello,

I just picked up two of the baby Goddards and I love them. I found them at a local army surplus store. I bought both of the C20's that the guy had. I never really wanted one until I saw one there.

be safe all,
Mike

Goddard Jr. PS blade, favorite Spyderco ever. Had one, bought another, gave away the first, used the second for years until the pivot ring fell off so I gave it away, foolishly questing after some new, flash-in-the-pan EDC. The Goddard Jr. is absolutely wonderful. How can I find another now when I have to compete with all you guys?
