I'm looking to buy the either the Canon S410 or the Minolta DiMAGE.

Besides E-Bay do you know of any reliable online dealers for cameras? I'm looking to buy brand new and not used.

Any help much appreciated.

FWIW, I would go with the S410 over the DiMage. The Canon is slightly bigger/ heavier (can't carry comfortably in shirt pocket), but image quality is vastly superior. The compact/ ultracompacts are often faulted for poor nighttime shooting; the DiMage has a reputation for being particularly poor in this respect. I bought an S400 in part because it is considered the best in this regard.

In any case, if you're willing to pay msrp, B&H Photo and Video has an impeccable reputation. I've purchased from them several times; their staff is very knowledgeable and professional.

The S410 is available at Digital Foto Discount Club for $350.85. My brother has purchased from them in the past, and thinks highly of them.

A Google/Froogle search turns up prices for the S410 as low as $314, $319, $322.22, $323.96 here and here, $329.99, and so on. I can't vouch for their reputations/ credibility, but you may be able to find information online (or perhaps folks who read this may have done business with one or more of them).

Apologies for not turning up prices for the DiMage; short on time, unfortunately! But I'm sure you can find comparable discounted prices by following these links here.

I also would recommend the S410 over the Dimage.

Be wary of venders that offer a really low price online. Always try to look up their URL, contact info, address, or phone number through google or the BBB. 9 times out of 10, the ones offering rock bottom prices pull one or more of the following:

- Require your CC# and phone# before your order is "confirmed", then a high pressure sales man will call and try to sell you on ridiculously over-priced accessories. If they fail to sell you, they'll either cancel the order, raise the price, or send it to you at a higher price (or w/ accessories) knowing it's harder for you to get back your money once you have product (restocking fees).

- Sell you grey market, pre-owned, or refurbished items without it being labelled as such on their website.

- Raise the price without telling you.

- Do not have the item in stock but simply use it as bait to sell you on other items and to collect your personal information.

etc. etc.

So buyer beware. With electronics, for some reason, there are particularly seedy web venders out there. BTW, in the first scam, every now and then, if you're firm, know your stuff, and don't mind being cussed at... you can fight the salesman AND get your camera at the advertised low price. But I wouldn't bet on it.

Sometimes Dell has killer buys on such items--lowest item+shipping total price.

Thanks for all the help guys. We were leaning more toward the Canon but just needed to hear a few more opinions.

Appreciate all the links too.

Thanks!
