It's not as much fun as gathering your own, but I found a place online that sells good quality fatwood. I ordered a box before Christmas, and it's excellent -- very dense, resiny, and I've started a couple of fires with a single firesteel spark. It's also very clean and dry, so it's easy to work with.

Cost is about $1/pound, plus reasonable shipping.

I have no connection to the store other than being a happy customer. It's more of a boutique-y garden store than a typical outdoors place, so it might not otherwise have been on the radar of people around here:

That looks like an interesting site. Thanks for sharing it. BTW I got 5 pounds of fat wood from Lowes recently and am really pleased with it. :)

I've seen fatwood cut into kindling and sold at hardware stores as a fireplace fire starter.

That stuff is pretty cheap for a bundle and you don't need to pay shipping.

I picked some up at walmart the other day. They were selling it over by the fireplace starter logs, infact thats what it was advertised as. i'm pretty new to fatwood so i'm not sure if it's decent quality or not. IT burnt pretty good. I had alot harder time fuzzing it than i do normal dry wood and it left some resin on my knife afterwards??? I guess this is all to be expected so no harm no foul.

Glad to hear some of you have had good luck locally, too -- thanks for the ideas (though my 30# box should cover me for... a long time).

A drop of lighter fluid will take the resin off a blade very easily. Probably a good idea to keep it away from the scales, though, in case it interacts with the glue.

If your only option for fatwood is the store, be sure to stock up on it now This item is seasonal and will be gone in a couple of weeks.

They sell fatwood in big honkin' bags at my local grocery store from time to time. I keep meaning to pick up a sack....

Country Hearth sells it as well. I dont believe lighter fluid will hurt good handle epoxy. I have used industrial strength stripper to remove various applied finishes on knives. This was slathered on and allowed to sit for extended periods of time. No damage to Micarta either.

Really glad you guys told me about the lighter fluid....I sanded it off.....after a little 2k it was back to the normal finish......

I'd gotten some of the Wally world stuff before. Some pieces were dry and didn't light that well, but most were very "wet", caught fire quickly and burned long and hot with that sweet bacon-sizzling sound.

However, a pine died and fell over in my back yard and I have a fatwood stump from hell standing back there, so I won't be buying any for a while.

smersh -
Thanks for the information - I often wondered if fatwood came from a particular type of tree - now I know.

Can anyone address the size of the fatwood you all are seeing available commercially?

Specifically, anyone know a source of it with a good size, not in terms of length, but cross section?

I am looking for it to be in the 3/4" plus by 3/4" plus range, so that I can put a decent lanyard hole in it, and so that it will last a couple outings....

I have some already, but I am sourcing more for projects...

BTW - If it is not to had, I will just get that super block from Going Gear, and froe it up...

Marion,
Give me a call. I've got a ton of it around my property. Let me know what you need.

If you go with a commercial source, the stuff I linked above is typically in pieces around 3/4" square.
