good options for Kitchen cutlery

I've been lurking here for a while but haven't seen discussions about kitchen specific knives.

My son recently announced his engagement and I'd like to get him started with something I never treated myself to, a good set of kitchen (food preparation) knives.

shopping can be quite confusing and I'm guessing that there may be pitfalls in buying knives in a set, where like with most other things, you may end up with pieces you don' t need or quality that isn't worth the price.

It seems that even so called "name" brands offer some crappy knives which makes it difficult to know what to stay away from.

can anyone offer advice or brand specific info if they've invested in knives they would recommend?

what size/type knives do you consider essential for kitchen work ?

There are a lot of sets out there, my advice would be to spend the money on three really nice knives rather than a block full of good ones. You can find sets of three that usually have a 6-8' chef's knife, a paring knife, and a utility knife. These will handle all of the day-to-day food prep tasks that you don't need a specialty knife for (like a bread cutting knife or a boning knife).
As for brands, hard to go wrong with Wusthof's classic line, very nice knives that hold an edge extremely well:

Hope this helps and have fun shopping.

I agree

Instead of the additional knives get a knife sharpener like the spyderco sharpmaker. No use having decent knives if you do not keep them sharp
