Good Pants

I am looking to buy a good pair of pants to wear at work. I work in retail, and want something comfortable and durable. Basically I want a more baggy fitting pant, the more pockets the better, and the bigger the pockets the better. At the moment I am looking for something black, as I just bought a pair in khaki.

I am looking at:
Carhartt - Have worn in the past, but were not as loose as I would like
Royal Robbins - These were good, just wasn't real fond of the elastic waistband
Proper Brand BDU Pant - I think this is the head contender right now, just not sure of the fit

I loved the Carhartt double knee duck work pant while I was doing landscaping, but just didn't like the fit so much. Maybe buying a size larger would help?? My only real problem with the 5.11's was the waist, which wasn't that big of a deal. I guess my biggest question is how is the fit on the Proper BDU pants? Is it more like a cargo pant (somewhat baggy) or a more fitted pant? I really want something on the baggy side with large pockets as I am always trying to cram more things into my pockets when working. Small pockets and a fitted pant make this uncomfortable, or impossible. Thanks.

Duluth Trading has some really cool pants. I prefer the Boss Man's British Khakis

as for pockets? check out their Skiller's Duck Work Pants...

Yes, they're brown, but black isn't good for retail anyway, unless it's one of them clothing stores where you have to talk with a lisp and point with a limp wrist.

BDU fit depends somewhat on your size. They are sized S M L rather than by waist measure. If you fall in the bottom of say the medium range they're a bit baggier than if your waist was in the upper range. I certainly wouldn't call them fitted under any circumstances. One caveat, the outside top corner of the cargo pocket can tear a hole in the pant leg over time. Twill tape stitched inside the leg at the point in question for reinforcement can help to minimize this.

Well I just ordered a pair of BDU pants, at $20 I think I can afford trying out a pair. ;) I fall between a medium and large according to the sizing, so I went ahead and got the large. I always wear a belt anyway, and prefer things a bit more baggy than fitted. Easier to cram my pockets full of crap, and just more comfortable when working 12 hours. :D

I also tried out some of the Carhartt's this afternoon, and found that they are cut just fine for me. They just run like a size smaller than everything else I usually wear. So where I am normally a 32/34 in the Carhartt I needed a 36, which fit exactly like a 32/34 in other brands.

BDU sometimes gets you the wrong kind of social attention though... Not fun when you get questioned by police or attacked by people.

I wear dickies pants, either pleated or "loose fit" work pants with the cell phone pocket. the pleated are dressy enough for casual business attire and the extra pocket is great for whatever..... I like the 65 poly 35 cotton blend.

Generally I try to avoid police interogations and attacks from others.

Cabelas makes a Trail Hiker cargo that is similar to 5.11s but at a lower price.

The most recent Sierra Trading catalog I got had Carhartt Tool pants, that have cargo pockets.

Tadgear.com has an improved, and more expensive BDU. I've seen them in person, and they are well made, but pricey for BDUs.

Finally, Orvis has some really nice, but really expensive cargos like the 10th Mtn and Zambezi.

I second the Dickies. I think I've got the "sherpa". 100% cotton cos I've worked in some fairly warm places otherwise I'd have poly/cotton. When I worked in retail I always wore a waist size larger for comfort.
