I've been watching Ray mears again, and I have a want for some birch bark. I've never been able to find any in my locale (Cole County, Mo). I know it grows near sources of water, I think. Does nayone have any other tips on where to find it? Thank you!

It depends on where you live. Birch grow profusely around here in the Boreal forest.

I wish I could find some though... it would be nice to have a reliable source found easily in nature.. hmm. .. Ok thanks all!

Around here various types of birch (Paper birch, grey birch, sweet birch, yellow birch) grow near water or in moist lowland soil. White birch is more common a little further north and I'm not too familiar with river birch.

Go to your local park and see if you have any there. That is where I get mine at.
I have never found it wild in my area yet. I also know several people in town that have it growing in the yards. So look around your town too and see if anyone has any in there yards.

Like most anything else; check ebay. I bought some a couple years back. 3 or 4 sheets , nice, full thickness--and it wasnt all that expensive for the square footage i received,

Birch is pioneer species. That requires a lot of light.

More likely to be found near clearings, at the edges of woods, in young extending forest.
Unlikely near thick canopy trees like Beech (although may grow in clearings, around fallen trees...).
Pionneering the edge of man-managed areas such as former industrial sites.

Please note that there are different birch bark grades. Only birch up north will give the best birch bark (thicker) necessary for some projects.
