I am looking to purchase a reasonably priced portable propane heater for outdoor/emergency use. Anybody know of any good ones OTHER than the Mr. Heater brand? I have heard too many bad things about that one to make me want one.

I have a couple of them but we need to know how much area your heating to give recommendations, tent heaters work differently from larger space heaters. One thing you need to know about propane is that they give off carbon monoxide, you really need to use them with proper ventilation.

Looking for something to heat the garage since it's also my workshop. Also, want one for power outages to heat a room to make it liveable. I understand the risks associated with using one indoors. I also plan on purchasing CO sensors as well.

They're not portable, but if you install an overhead tube heater vented outside for the shop CO is not an issue.

I use portable propane heaters & have experienced CO poisoning in the shop.
If I had I used it in the house and been asleep I would have woken up dead.

If you have to vent enough to ensure you won't die - you won't gain anything in heat.

The portables also heat very locally. directly in front of it can melt everything in it's path, 20 feet away - nothing.

For in home use, install one of those propane - natural gas fireplaces - be sure it doesn't need electricity to run a fan, or light the flame.

I have a small one that works pretty well,30,000 BTU I think can't remember the make without looking but it's one from Lowes or Home Depot and it works fine but it needs electricity. Then I have another one that's adjustable from 30-80,000 btu that one works without electric and I've used it for a lot of things, including auxillary heat for the house,I put it in the basement and it did a heck of a job but that one has a much bigger flame so you need to be cautious with anything flammable nearby.

I've got a 40lb tank that I use with mine but I'd consider a 100lb tank if your going to use it much.
