Good quality Katana

Lemme see...

Bugei's custom offerings are Howard Clark's...top notch quality, superb performance, great finish and fit from the guys at Bugei.

You can get a blade direct from Howard as I think Triton posted too. However, you will need to get it polished and mounted by someone else.

Randal Graham is another good source for the high quality/low price Japanese-style stuff.

Another alternative would be Jerry Brumagen, a friend of mine who's very strong into traditional Japanese style. His stuff is spectacular for the whole traditional gig, and way underpriced. They also come with what some would call an "iai" finish, that could be touched up by a decent polisher with proper shiage just to bring out the activities more.

And another...Perhaps try to contact Rick Barrett (Hope I'm spelling the last name right) as I'm sure he could do a splendid job as well.

If you can find an old fully mounted Engnath blade, it'd be worthwhile too.

I don't really like Hartsfield's stuff, particularly the non-traditional-esque stuff. For the money, you're not really getting anything spectacular (in my opinion)...

Hope I've been able to help a little.

Shinryû.

um....Dane Dawson. out of Colorado I think; makes great working Japanese style blades out of 440.
in addition to traditionally styled pieces he also makes 'combat' tantos and wakizashiis.
for 4 grand I bet you could get a three-piece (katana, waki, tanto) from DD, plus enough bandaids to ge thru beginning iai practice LOL.

I think you meant Barry Dawson. His website is www.knives.com. I don't own a Dawson katana, but I have several of his knives and consider them to be top-notch in toughness and utility. Check out the work by his lovely niece, Lynn. Her blades show a lot of Barry's influence, which is not necessarily a bad thing, and have clean, simple grind lines. She's a very talented knifemaker. I'd like to see the quality of her work in ten years. I bet she's going to go far in this business.

I second Bugei's custom line. Howard Clark makes it, polished and mounted by Ted Tenold. You'll get more than you pay for.

I would go with Bugie:D . Must be nice to have $4 grand to spend :(.

Anguish has NO money.
