Hi, I'm hoping to start pier fishing this year in CA. I'd like to pickup a folder that is saltwater friendly (aluminum components, coated blade, etc.).

Knife duties:

Cutting bait
Cutting line

that's it.

What knives should I be looking at?

The Spyderco salt series are basically rust proof. When I go fishing I use nail clippers or SAK scissors, but I'm not sure how they'll hold up around salt water.

I have the Spyderco Pacific Salt and Salt1. They are light and perfect for salt water use. The blade is rust proof (not rust resistant). The other hardware is titanium. There are no liners so it is not meant for hard use. One is the aproximate size of the Endura and the other simililar to the Delica. I also have the Griptilian H2O which is at least rust resistant, but the are too many nooks and crannys to clean if you get it dirty or drop it in the water. It is much studier than the Spyderco though.

The H1 in Spyderco's will not hold an edge(for PE, SE will be up there with VG-10, above N680 and X15tn in PE) as well but are rust proof, Benchmades X15tn and N680 are very rust resistant (not proof) and will have better edge holding.

I've used my Salt one only once in salt water cutting bait for crabbing, rinsed it off in the ocean water, shook it off and put it in my pocket (still quite wet) checked it a couple days later, after it had dried, the only thing I could see was some dry salt residue on it, that rinsed off in the sink, absolutely no staining or rust, I've also gone swimming with it in pocket dozens of times in the river for hours, with the same result, minus the dried on salt of course.

spyderco salt series is the only real option when it comes to saltwater knives. Carried my Pacific Salt in my trunks while surf fishing this summer for almost two weeks, light touch up on a stone after each trip to the water and it preformed amazingly, no rust at all, and stays sharp all day and keeps sharp with a light touch up at night

This is far from true in my use sure it doesnt hold an edge like a super steel but if you manage to dull it in 1 day to the point where you have to resharpen the whole edge outside the 10 minute touch up session to make it razor sharp agian you are doing something wrong. You are not breaking down cardboard boxes in the middle of salt water, you are cutting soft flesh and fishing line

A couple dozen frozen shad, through the spine most of the time, but yes I'd say edge retention is about AUS-8 level, and super easy to sharpen. (I sharpen my knives once they can't shave easily).

When I go pier fishing I have a dedicated bait knife and then I have my pocket knife for cutting line etc... The bait knife gets gunked up with blood, guts, scales etc. I use an el cheapo knife for that. My other knife is a good folder that can be opened and closed with one hand for cutting the tag end of mono etc... As long as you wash your knife after you get home, any good stainless folder of your liking will work fine.

Excellent suggestion.
I do the same thing and my el cheapo is China made SOG MiniAuto Clip.

Salt for the win!

boye knives with a cobalt blade. rust proof as well
I've owned/used a Boye sailing knife for years with no rust at all. I always have it when I swim in the ocean. The dendritic cobalt blade stays very sharp.

The marlin spike comes in handy, too.

Did anyone suggest a Spyderco knife from the Salt series made of H1 yet:D

They are great knives even if you do not fish in salt water;)

Definitely the Spyderco Salt series. I have a ladybug in H1 and it takes a really nice edge. You'll want a larger blade, but H1 is good steel.
