Hi!

I would be grateful for some suggestions on a good Self defence/utility folder. I have looked at the benchmade 806, 710, and some spyderco - like the native. What do you think of them?

Is there any other good ones in the same prise range?

Thanks a lot! :)

Sigurd.

Every so often I hear people talk about getting a knife for SD but it must be able to pragmatic enough to open envelopes or cut cardboard with ease. I put that question to myself "Would I actually use a knife for self-defense?" If I was put in a situation that I would have to defend myself against an attacker, would it be justified in using a knife and slicing or stabbing a person? Do I even know how to use a knife to defend myself if it came down to it? Good luck to those that know the answers.

BTW, a single plain edge Microtech OTF Scarab would be my choice of a utility/SD knife:thumbup: :D ;). Not legal in all areas and YMMV.

EDIT: Oops, you asked for a folder. A Microtech side opening auto would be nice. Or less expensive would be a Lone Wolf Double Duty Auto. I say auto because if you are in a self defense situation, seconds count and I wouldn't want to be fumbling around figuring how to open the damn thing. Mi Dos Centavos.

I lean toward spydercos, the native is a great buy and i like mine. it's a little small for sd, you might look at the spyderco endura, great knife for both utility and would serve well for sd. i'm sure you'll get a lot of opinions on this topic. later, ahgar
btw i'm just curious, hows the weather over there??

Spyderco Endura (waved version)

You know, BTW, it's recommended that you keep your SD knife at maximum sharpness. So if you don't want to be sharpening it regularly, you might want to get a cheap beater knife too for your utility purposes.

Or a superknife with replaceable utility blades. something like that.
Very handy.

I think the BM710 is one of the best designed folders on the market, especially from a utility standpoint. I am not qualified to speak to the issue of a folder design for self defence, but will not that I carry a Spyderco Native when jogging trails and such, it is lightweight and clipped to workout shorts never drags you down. As well, the knife is easy to handle, opens fast, has a sharp point

Take a look at the pro hunter from Blade Tech. Don't let the "hunter" in the name fool you, its a jack of all trades.

You might take a look at the Waved Endura by Spyderco. With the wave feature, you can open the blade as you draw the knife, which for me is faster than finding the button to open the auto (which is illegal where I live anyway). It is lighter than the 710, has plenty of blade length and is very strong and durable. And it costs a lot less, too.

Waved Endura for defense, training,

Heartily agree on the waved endura 4 for a utility defense folder. It's easily strong enough for utility/defense work, great steel, great edge geometry from the factory, opening hole, great handle ergonomics, and the wave. And priced right. For a number of reasons, it's become my EDC, even over classics like the 710 HSS (which itself is just plain awesome).

Emerson always comes to mind with regard to these type of inquiries. Gander over to the Emerson website and see that they have quite a few offerings in this regard and a comprehensive study program on the useage of their tools as well. A Cold Steel Large, XL/X2 or Vaquero Grande and the Recon 1 are worthy contenders too IHMO.

Some people think you should carry a separate knife for self-defense, to keep the edge sharper than on a knife you use every day.

I disagree. When you find yourself in trouble, your hand will go to your utility knife, the knife you are most familiar with using, not a special hideaway tactical weapon you won't remember is there until the emergency is over.

The Waved Ednura is an incredible knife. It opens quickly and smoothly, locks up tight, and has a long, strong spearpoint blade. And you can use the Wave as a bottle opener! :D

Hey, if the Emerson is not right for you for whatever reason. Like you don't want to spend that much money, or you don't like liner locks, or maybe you are not fond of the fit and finish of Emersons. Feel free to get the Waved Delica or Endura. I have them both, and they are incredible knives for the money.

All the above is important information but don't forget the most important piece of the SD part: a guy with a steak knife or screwdriver that knows how to use it and is mentally prepared will quickly dispatch a guy with Kabar fighting knife that doesn't know how to use it and is not prepared mentally.

Thanks for all the tips and comments!

I will check up the suggested knives. The endura looks good...:)

ahgar, the weather here is not so good, its rains a lot and its rather cold, - Winter and snow its on its way!

SD knife use: 0.5%
Utility use: 77%
Food prep: 20%
Other 2.5%

I'd buy a knife based more on Utility use, unless you happen to be a LEO or in the Mil.

With that said, the Endura or Delica sound perfect for you, maybe even a Waved version to make you feed bad to the bone.

Dont forget the waved Delica 4 , raises fewer eyebrows among the Sheeple , and has similar capabilities .
