Good sharpener for backpack

I am looking for a good sharpening setup for out in the field (maybe a small diamond stone combo). Currently all I have is a lansky blademedic.

What do you use or what would you recommend?

All of my field blades are convex. I bring a small, two-sided leather strop loaded with two different grits of compound, and strop frequently when I'm using the blade a lot. I also throw in a couple small pieces of 1000 and 1500 grit sandpaper, in case the edge needs more help than the compound can provide. The whole thing fits in a small zip-loc , weighs almost nothing and I've never needed more than that.

Buck EdgeTek Ultra FlipStick 4" Diamond 3-Sided Sharpening Stick, Fine/Medium/Coarse.

Scott Gossman recommended the above to me and I love it.

DMT two sided folder as previously mentioned. I like corse and medium. They downgrade one abbrasive as used, older wears out a bit.

The diafold is awesome, but if you want one that you will always have with you, grab one of the credit card sized DMTs in medium or fine..it will always be in your wallet, and take care of whatever you need to get you back to camp.

A little spit, will make it glide :).

Another vote for the Diafolds. Mine is Coarse/Fine, I think. It works fine. I also have a Falkinven DC4 that is nice, but the DMTs are easy to get hold of, relatively cheap, and work just fine.

I like the small Spyderco pocket stones. I carry a medium and a fine stone in the same pouch with a piece of leather between the 2 stones to protect them. I also use this piece of leather as a strop.

How about a DMT mini-sharp?

+1
I find the E Fine plenty becuse my knives are sharp and EF is all I need for a touch up
The have an O-Ring to put your little finger in to hold it quite easily
And they are very light indeed

I bought 2 double sided diamond plates from ragweed forge; one is credit card sized, the other is not as wide, but slightly longer. I got the med/fine grits, and they fit in pocket, wallet, or pack equally well. Plus, I paid less than 25$ for both, and they are USA made.

I still like and use my old Eze-Lap , a 4" rod that slides back into it's handle .Had it for 25 years at least ! Worn now to about 1200 grit. Nice tools but they don't seem to go after the knife market , strange ?

What kind of knives (blade material) do you normally carry and how do you sharpen them at home?

IMO, the field kit a) should be capable of handling your hardest steel and b) should work in conjunction with your normal sharpening approach.

In general, I really dislike pull through style sharpeners and only use a steel (rod) for certain knives with certain (soft) steels (to tune up rolled edges).

In general, I really like the DMT credit card sharpener and would turn to that not knowing anything else about the knife in question. But it does require some practice.

Like some others, I've moved convexed edges and I carry some different stuff for that, but until we hear more about what knife you carry and how you normally sharpen, I don't think it makes sense to make recommendations.

DMT credit card sharpener Vs the DMT Mini-sharp?

I have both and find the Credit card flat shape much harder to hold
The Mini-Sharp is easy to hold to bring the blade to the sharpener or taking the sharpener across the blade

+1 on the Eze -Lap diamond rod that stores within its handle. I've used mine for the last 15 years on all sizes of knives. Good for a quick hit in the field and would carry easily in your pack.

i'm still using this worksharp and love it a lot!
