Good sized khuk for EDC

Hello everyone,
This is my first post. From all of your experiences what is is a good size for an EDC khuk? I just bought a 12.5 inch 10 oz Katunje my special as well as a KLVUK as my first HI khuks. Would the Katunje be good size for EDC knife? Also no state laws on blaxe size as long as it's not concealed.

Great choices. Katunje would be a great edc and will do anything light duty. KLVUK will do anything medium duty from light brush to small trees. Now all you need is a big chopper like an Ang Khola. Then a sword and an axe then... etc. & etc...

Yeah I definitely see myself buying a lot of HI khuks, swords, axes and so on

It all depends on how you expect to use it. The weight might be more important than the length, especially if you take long hikes. A large blade or heavy chopper might be unwieldy for smaller tasks. I suggest that you wait for your new Katunje to arrive and try it out before deciding on a second HI blade. The blade you describe is small by HI standards, but it is not small for an EDC in most parts of the U.S.

Even if your state laws allow open carry, you still have to consider the prevailing attitudes where you live. In some places a large blade might be a conversation-starter, but in other places you might get hassled because people think you're Jason from the Friday the Thirteenth movie.

Now if you'd like to do a Crocodile Dundee imitation, you could consider a Cherokee Rose. Not a khukuri, but one of the most distinctive HI blades. Here's a CR with a custom sheath done by Pugs, one of our forumite leatherworkers. The knife is 20" overall length and weighs 27 oz. It's by Lok Kami, who did good work but is no longer with HI.

As Crocodile Dundee might say, "Now, that's a knife!"

The handle is long enough for a hand-and-a-half grip, if you ever have the need to cleave something from stem to stern. :)

It is a bigger knife than what I've been using for an EDC, a 10inch overall length, with a 4.5 inch blade Dan Peters custom fighter. I do plan on using both the kukri's I'm waiting on to get a feel for them before I get another. I'll probably message Yangdu and for her suggestions to get one for the tasks I have in mind. The Katunje was just too beautiful of a knife to pass up.

They're a little tricky for EDC due to length and weight. My 15 inch 23 oz BAS fits well in my backpack (which I tote around everywhere), but my state has no laws on manner of carry. It does feel light on my good leather belt when I'm out and about or in the woods and I could wear it all day. The Ang Khola is a beast but I can manage it just fine as well. I would suggest getting a adjustable belt for the larger ones (I use a cheap nylon belt) otherwise you're going to be unbuckling and unthreading every time you want to sit down or take a drive.

The other issue is that they are unsuited to most of the everyday tasks I use a blade for. I love them, but they are just too large in a lot of cases.

If you're referring to the Cherokee Rose, I agree. I wasn't really recommending it for an EDC. The Cherokee Rose is pretty much at the outer limit of what could be called a knife. It's designed as a fighter and in size it's up there close to short-sword territory.

Get a micro bowie, make a kydex sheath or see if you can have a leather sheath made to wear high on the belt. It'll do anything that needs doing in civilization.
Save the khuk for at home, in the woods, or the wild.
Bring the bowie there too, it does good work there too.

finally got a IBBB! I absolutely love it!!

AnyAb how big are the micro Bowie's?

Please keep in mind I just made a thread about carrying an 18.5" Seax strapped across my chest;) However, I thing the micro bowies are just about perfect for edc.

If you want to carry an HI knife but dont need a massive chopper, those micro bowies are perfect. They come in around 7-8" over all with a 4ish" blade. Really broad and stout as you could ask. I have carried mine on my hip and even in a flat back pocket sheath.

I was just going to say the above, but Mr. B beat me to it.

Only the bottom one in that picture is mine. The rest were for other folks. I checkered them or replaced handles or did something.
I do have a couple back ups of my own now, wouldn't want to be without one if something happened to mine.
