Dont care for the handle, just looking for a good double bit axe head. Anyone have any recommendations or ideas?

Appreciate your time.

I REALLY wanted one too, so I watched ebay like a hawk. I got a old Norlund... it wasn't cheap. They are VERY sought after by collectors and users. I scored another slightly smaller one that is unmarked too, much cheaper. I think because it had no markings on it. Colins used to make double bits too, very similar to my norlund. Any old American made one you can find will be good quality.

Not cheap and not quick. These beauties have a waiting period.

I know Michigan Knives usually has a few Reeves double bits in stock for immediate delivery.

I think your best bet would be to watch ebay, scour antique shops, or anywhere that sells old tools. Especially in farm country. Not too many folks custom or production making them these days. I know there is a cheap Marbles double bit. Made in China. I have played with one, not all that well made. The head is really thick and does not taper very thin for the cutting edge. More like a sharp splitting wedge. Plus I have heard the head tends to fly off in use.

the name you will hear over and over and over in this forum is gransfors bruks. i cannot personally attest to its quality but never have i heard a negative word about any of their products.

The problem is that GB makes only a full-size double bit (which I like a lot). For a small double bit, I bought a bocote-handled Reeves and have a curly maple on order. It does not have a strictly traditional Nessmuk look but it is a great axe.

That has been my experience with the Marbles as well. I don't trust it.
