I'm looking for a good relatively cheap chopper. I'm willing to go over $100 but not by much something thats good for clearing brush/grass/chopping trees/ battoning etc. I like the Junglas but it's just to expensive unless I can find one for cheap but I've looked and only found prices near $200. Can someone please help me out

Check out the Becker BK9 and the Machax which is coming out soon!

Becker BK-9, Ontario SP-45, blems on the Himalayan Imports forum, Condor Hudson Bay, Golok, Warlock, and Boomslang.

The latest production runs of the Buck Hoodlum are getting close to $100, but they aren't quite there yet. The Cold Steel Recon Scout and Trail Master are just a bit above your limit as well.

What kind of chopper are we talking here? I mean, are you wanting basically a "large knife" or something more machete or kuhkri like?

The Becker BK9 is great for its size, and is still pretty lightweight and fairly nimble for a blade of its size, but something like the Condor Golok should be much better at purely chopping.

Other blades out there to look into would be the ontario 12in machete, the Kabar Cutlass Machete, condor kumunga.

The Becker BK4 "Machax" should be coming out really soon, and Condor has an 11in "dundee" bowie coming out as well as a few shorter and stouter machete/kuhk patterns that might fit your needs.

Also, the benefits of a larger knife will be generally higher hardness (better edge retention for instance), but also a little more prone to chipping rather than bending. Also, its generally a bit easier to do knife like tasks with a big knife than with a machete. The flip side though is that physics mean they generally aren't as good of choppers.

Good luck man :).

Ontario's lineup of Ranger RD's, specifically the RD-9, would be something to consider. Come in 5160 carbon steel, 1/4" thick, micarta scales.

If it's gonna' be clearing grass or brambles I'd go with a full-blown machete. Clearing either with a short-bladed (sub-16") chopper is gonna' do a number on your back and knuckles.

Here ya go...

You're welcome.

I've beat on my CS Recon Scout in SK5 a whole lot, and it has performed superbly. Right under 100 bucks IIRC

+1. if you are mostly clearing grass and brush, get a machete. as for a machete, condor is a really good choice.

if you are mostly working with wood, a condor varan/kumunga, condor boomslang, becker BK-9 or ontario RD-9 are some models to look at.

other than that.....
a gerber paraframe 1. ive batoned with it, chopped with it, but that may be small for what you want. im just saying, for $20.00, you get a knife that will surprise you

You also might want to check out an Ontario 8335 SP8 chopper.Blade length 10". $52.00.

I have and use around ten different big choppers. Condors are inexpensive, come with a good sheath and have convex edges. The Becker bk9, Kabar heavy Bowie, Kabar cutlass, Kabar Kukri, Condor Kumunga, Condor kukri, Condor Golok and Cold steel kukri machete are all great choppers for the money in my opinion. I would recommend looking at the sheath closely if you are going to be carrying it far. Good luck buddy!
