Good Source Needed for Swiss Army Knife

Ladies and Gents, my daughter wants a Swiss Army knife for Christmas. We decided (she decided) she wants the Jumpmaster model.

I'm concerned that because it has a locking blade it might be illegal here in the People's Republik of Kalifornia.

So, first question is: what is a good source for getting one of these knives at a decent price?

And...

Anyone know if they are illegal in Kalifornia?

Thanks.

Don

Don-- I can't recommend a good source, but as far as legality in California, my understanding is that folders, except for switchblades and butterfly knives, are legal, and can be carried concealed as long as the blade is closed. Different cities might have more stringent rules.

I think Josh is quite right. As long as it is not automatic in any way, and is not disguised to look like something other than a knife, it's fine.

CDNN Investments (yup!) (look via Google for them) is selling Wenger SAK's, some with locking blades, for more than 66% off list. If they have a model you like, you can't beat the price. Quick deliver too.

Hope you guys are right about locking blades being legal in Kali. I could swear I read something straight from one of the laws that prohibited locking bladed knives, but I don't have the legal code handy any more.

Thanks, and please don't be shy with more tips.

Don

A google search on "swiss army" and jumpmaster brings up only a few places that carry this model, but only one that I've done business with -- knifeoutlet.com. Nicely enough, their price is far and away the lowest -- $19.99 vs. up to $47.00 at Chesapeake Knife & Tool!

I just got a "Tinker II" at Lowes (Home Depot competitor) for ... about $14, including one of those cheapo sharpeners that you slide the knife through.

The Tinker II has the two blades, can opener/screw driver, bottle opener/screw driver, scissors, awl, corkscrew, and multipurpose/useless hook. It ain't what you asked about, but it's a kinda good deal. Only thing, it isn't the same as the regular ones. The blades seem the same, but the plastic grips are some sort cheap textured plastic instead of the nice shiny plastic. (Oh dear. I'm comparing the quality of plastic grips where hand-carved bone is typical. Sorry. I just hope I don't get flamed by someduck who thinks these are crap because they're less than 12".) What bothered me more is the logo in the grip. Normally it's some kind of metal inlay. With these, it's some sort of indentation with what looks like silvery paint. Ugh.

Don if you can't find the legal code you might do a search on Jim March and e-mail him about the subject. If anyone knows absolutely for sure it will be Jim, and Jim is one helluva good guy!!!!:D

If you decide to look at other models, I would strongly advise you to stick to the Victorinox-made knives and avoid the Wengers. I've had both, and the blade steel in the Victorinox has always been superior to that of the Wengers, in my experience.

Only place swiss army knives are illegal is on schcool grounds.

Don, the web address for CDNN is "WW.CDNNINVESTMENTS.COM." For example, they have the Wenger "Master" with a locked main blade and a dozen or so tools for $12.99. They have the Wenger Combo Tools for $19.99. Wenger is "the genuine Swiss Army Knife." Victorinox is the "Original Swiss Army Knife." They're both correct and both made in Switzerland, although I like the Vic's can-opener better. Happy Thanksgiving.
