I am 14 yrs old and want to make a knife for hunting and general use. I have watched loads of videos and have a good idea of how to make a knife. I don't know what steel would be good to use because i want to heat treat it myself (with a small forge made out of firebricks and a propane torch). I am thinking of using 1084 because it is relatively inexpensive and I am on a tight budget. My equipment is limited to a drill press, a hacksaw, files, bench grinder and i am thinking about getting a small $40 belt grinder at harbor freight. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Head over the the knifemaking subforum, there is a ton of info there for you in the stickies / FAQs. The answer is 1084 ;)

Yes, 1084 from Aldo at New Jersey Steel Baron. Also, llike zcd said, read those sticky posts....lots of good stuff.

I think you are on the right track for sure young buck! Definitely read all you can, and the belt grinder would definitely be a worthwhile investment. I think a good, simple carbon steel like 1084 would be perfect to start with, and even stick with in the future. Good luck to you, and if you make any blades, post pics!
