Good stockman

Case 6375 with CV steel ( or stainless if you want a few more choices in handle material ).

What is your budget? Buck 303 Cadet is hard to beat in the $30 range and U.S. made. Case is a great choice for not much more money but if you can afford it look for a GEC #66 Calf Roper or #68 Buckaroo. Those are both great ones. Also if you search the auction site you can still find Shrade Old Timer 340T on there and that is another great one. Lots of other options too and we could help narrow it down in you could answer what your budget is, handle material as in wood, bone, or synthetic preference and what size of knife are you looking for.

You can't go wrong with a Case stockman. All the Case knives I got are top quality.

But what is your budget? I've seen a Frost Steel Warrior Stockman for around $20. But the quality control can be hit or miss. I got two Steel Warrior knives, one is really nice, IMO on par with a few of the Case knives I got. The other is so so.

GEC Abeline.

Or GEC #53 Stockman, or Cattle Barron would be my recommendation.

+1 on Bigfatty 's GEC recommendations if your budget is $100. Also the Case 6375 large stockman is a lot of knife for a little money. Even cheaper are the rough riders mentioned above. I have the latter two and desire the new Abeline in Osage orange. I probably carry the rough rider the most. The one I have has a cap lifter as a 4th implement.

I think that just about covers it.

Case is OK most of the time. Try to purchase in person if possible so you can check the knife for problems before buying. Jagged blade edges, weak springs, and wobble are common on some models. Fortunately their stockman are usually OK - my favorite pattern from them is the midsize stockman with rounded bolsters, available in CV. This one runs about $45.

If ordering with no opportunity to inspect in person, I'd highly recommend Boker carbon steel traditionals instead. Better fit and finish than Case, and for about the same price. This one is $50.

Don't overlook the most popular American knife of all time, by my estimate at least ;) , the Schrade 34OT Middleman. 1095 carbon steel, very good and consistent quality, and available in plenty of variations. Look for the "USA" on the tang stamp to ensure you're getting an original and not a modern import.

Or the larger 8OT:

You just can't beat the price, looks and sharpness of a Case Large Stockman with yellow delrin handle and CV steel. Mine was $39.00 and some change, sure you could find it cheaper than that with a search. Case has a few other handle options for the CV as well, I plan on getting all them over time.

There are a ton of choices out there in your price range but I'll toss in a recommendation for my favorite Stockman pattern.

The Case 63046 Humpback Stockman. I like the pattern because it is somewhat unique in its price range. You don't see a lot of Stockman patterns with Spear master blades. There are a few available with Clip master blades if you prefer that. The Humpback also sports sunken joints and phosphor bronze bushings.

It's a pattern that Case brought back from the "Tested" era (as I understand it) so that makes it kind of unique too.

These are the Rough Black (also known as Gum Fuddy) handles but there are several other choices to choose from. They are available for about $45-$70 depending on your choice of handle material.

people seem to really like case - i also like case - but for the money , and what you get , i would go with the buck 301 , overbuilt ,plain old working mans knife , great price (about $30) , 3 backsprings (1 for each blade) instead of the normal 2 , so all 3 blades go in and come out straight , pins all the way though the bolsters , you just cant beat this knife as a user stockman - lifetime warranty - nice thick blades - and for a little more money you can get a few different colors, models, different handles - they just came out with one with brass bolsters and rosewood handles - they also have red and yellow , and maybe a few more i have not seen - cant say enough about this knife - for the price i think the buck beats a case stockman hands down - not all will agree - but look at both and you will see - marc

I recently bought a CRKT pocket classic stockman.
A superb traditional design for around $20.

I would go with the Case medium Stockman. The large Stockman is a fine knife but it does not fit in the coin pocket of my jeans. The medium Stockman is just right. The CV blade steel rocks.

I swear by my CRKT Stockman, that thing never leaves my pocket. Decent fit and finish for the price (blade grind was a bit wonky on the sheepsfoot, sort of convex/zero ground the blade). The 440A used ain't half bad either, it holds it's edge well and sharpens up with stupid ease.
