Here's another slipjoint thread! It is coming up to my birthday and apparently I have been a good boy so my wife asked me what I wanted. After about 0.0000000000001 seconds of thought I was like 'How about a knife!' At the moment I am into slipjoints with the stockman being a favorite pattern. I have a few ideas but am looking for some suggestions or thoughts. Price should be sub-$100.
Considered are:
Schatt & Morgan Serpentine Stockman
Queen Large Stockman (ATS 34 and bone handle)
Hen and Rooster Pearl Stockman

This will probably be a collectores piece rather than a user, my EDC at the mo' is a Kissing Crane stockman. Thanks for any input!

I'd go with the Queen because the newer models from under the name Schatt and Morgan (made by Queen) don't contain ATS34.

You can't go wrong with either model for quality though.

I have never been a fan of Hen and Rooster. Not sure why, they just don't float my boat.

Happy B-Day!

I think that Queen, including their S&M and Robeson brands, only used ATS-34 in 1999 and 2000, discontinuing its' use in early 2001. Of course, there is still some old stock available w/the premium steel. I could be wrong, and will stand corrected if that be the case. :o

If it's just going to be a collector's piece, why not get a Case? Case has some gorgeous patterns and natural scales. The only significant shortcoming is the steel, which isn't really factor in a showpiece. As long as it's stainless, so it doesn't accidentally rust on you, who cares about the steel?

Getting an ATS-34 slipjoint, and not using it, is a crime!!!!

Checkout the A.G. Russell web site for excellent quality slipjoints.
A.G. has some really beautiful stuff made by Queen, Case, Camillus,
and A.G.'s own line (these are really nice).

I'd go with Queen, or one of it's contract brands. Eye Brand is also a great brand(try, and find one of their giant Stockman patterns:D).

:):D.

For a collectible piece, you might consider the Marbles pocketknives introduced last year in carbon steel (1095). Among the classic patterns is a stockman, in pearl, jigged bone, or buffalo horn scales. They are slightly more than your $100 limit, but not much. At least worth a look.

If you were going to use it, I would recommend the Eye Brand or the Hen and Rooster. But, since you said just a collector, get the Case.

I would go with the Case Classic (made in 1996 by Queen).
You will pay a little more than a regular Case, but it is better made and should hold it's value better.

I am hot on the trail of a blue mooremaker stockman.
If I can't get one, I will go with a blue Hen & Rooster trapper. Queen has always been one of my very favorites including Schatt & Morgan (S&M?)and Robeson. All three made some with ATS 34 I think. BTW, I heard that only the main blades were ATS 34 and the others were something else. Anyone know for sure?

I called NDS Products once about the pricing on some knives. Pretty expensive stuff. The Winchester Wharncliffe whittlers ran $192.00 for the average Joe. They did ask whether I was a retailer, which might have gotten me much better pricing.

So is NDS expensive? I've been scouring around trying to find good sources for slipjoints with good pictures and they seemed pretty ok. The prices on Marbles seemed better than most. Any other suggestions?

I have not been able to find cheaper priced an the Marbles slipjoints.
But then I have only compared them to the well known cyber retailers' advertized prices.
