I am in the market for a good 5"-7" survival/camp knife for all around use. I own a spyerco folder for delicate stuff but I want a harder use knife for around the camp and for survival situations. I have a budget of under $100 and would like a fixed blade with a sheath, what do you reccomend??

For that price, or even if you had more to spend on it, my first choice would be a Ranger Knives RD6. One of the best bang for you buck knives out there IMO. I also think a Fallkniven F1 would be good. An S1 would probably be better but that would probably be a little more than $100. Bark Rivers are great too but but those are closer to $150 and up, unless you buy one used.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

The buck 119 special fits your bill at $50 (now you can get 2 new blades :D). Plus it looks great without any of that special black "military coating".

Checkout the COLDSTEEL SRK  Ontario RAT 5  Gerber LMF II  Ranger RD6  If you can find one a Camillus Becker Knife & Tool - BK10:thumbup:

I would say Ontario or Ranger would be a good option I currently have the ranger RD9 and Rat Cutlery RC3 and can say I am in love with both. Anyways back on topic Ontario or Ranger would be good options.

Correct me if Im wrong but someone in the forum said that the LMF II is good for tactical-cutting-yourself-out-of-a-car type stuff but is useless for hunting and camp chores I was interested in it once but after poking around on bladeforums, I decided against it. I second the BK-10. I have the BK-7. One heck of a knife for the $$$$.

I do not see why the LMF would be bad. Unless someone just doe not like any serrations. I am going to get a prodigy which feels better in my hand.

Survival Knive? As a yardstick I'ld use only what John Rambo would...
And also anything that looks just like it.
NOT!
Different regions and climate would create it's own particular ground challenges.
For instance an arid desert has no trees or it's lack therefo.
See any reason for a sawback knife a foot long?
Same thing with artic or polar regions.
Well, maybe a really long knife isn't such a bad idea to scare off those polar bears!
So you see, it depends where you're headed.
Rest assured the best would be something cheap and compact enough for you to bring two along just in case you're in a fix havin' broke the first.
My vote for a Ka-Bar Warthog.

Cold Steel Bushman.

7" blade, tough as all get out, and you can usually find them for around $20 - $25.

If you are talking wilderness type survival, I really have not found anything that has served me better than the D.H. Russell Survival #4. Just a beautiful piece of work...excellent ergonomic design, superbly versatile all around knife for field craft.

Ditto. I had one in the late 1980's, gave it to my uncle, bought another. For traditional good looks, edge-holding, durability, it's one of the best values, IMO. And, for $100., you can have a user and a backup.

thx - cpr

It is my turn now. :)

What kind of "survival" are you planning for? Ice cold tundra in siberia, hot arid deserts in Africa or just a normal day trip in the summer, but you want to have cool stuff.

Fallkniven F1 is a better outdoor survival knive than the LMF II. Period.
Fallkniven S1 is just a bit bigger than the F1 and just above 100 bucks. Buy it.

SRK, what planet are you born on? Buy a Mora knife instead, that way you wont be that disappointed WHEN the knife breaks.
