i am looking for a good $250.00 machete type knife that would be great for cutting through trails in a tropical forest. i am not looking for a machete or an axe. i already have the becker patrol machete and was curious as to what
other large (12"-14") blades are out there. the knife would be used during hunting season to cut trails that has alot of dense 2-4" trees including areas full of heavy grass. any input would be appreciated. thanks

Check out Justin Ginrich from Ranger knives he could fix you something to your specs for a good price. He will praticaly make you anything you want. And his knives are backed 100%.

Himalayan Imports has several khukuri offernings that may fill your requirements.

Just curious here-
Why do you need to bother clearing the grass? Are the saplings really that thick that you can't walk between them? (just remove the little branches that actually are in your way.) I assume you are gonna be stalking the deer here, and want to do so quietly?

i live in hawaii and the primary game here is wild hogs,i like to use dogs when hunting and at times when the dogs have the hog cornered, running through thick grass, cat claws, guava, haole koa, e.t.c the only way to get to the hog in time is to just blaze a trail through the thick brush. i currently have several knives that were listed buy other forum members like kukri, swamp rat, and at one point the tops knife. I am looking for a longer reaching knife (hence "12-14" blade length) to cut through areas that contain brush with alot of thorns. some of the knives that are listed are either to short, to thick, or just to unweildy. i am looking for a durable type of machete one that wont chip easily and yet wont be to thick to cut soft plants. i have the patrol machete which is wonderful but after reading Cliff's review on the knife and having him break 2 of them i am getting doubtful on the durability of this knife.
if you know of any dealers that carry such a knife let me know it would be much appreciated. thanks

p.s. please dont list that ugly knife that gerber makes for brush cutting the one with the long pole and the hook type blade. that thing is just plain useless in a hunting situation. thanks

Aloha!

Sounds like you live on the Big Island?

What about the Ontario Knives RTAK? I leveled a great deal of my "forest" with it, dinging the blade on the lava rock...damn I hate these guava trees! LOL! I dunno though...might get heavy on them long hauls...I currently keep my RTAK in car and use a Tramontina now...not too bad, but I gotta touch up more often than I'd like!

Well, hope you find a good one! 'Kay den!

God bless

Actually this sounds like the perfect job for the patrol machete, it won't have any troubles at all cutting through thick grass or soft plant matter. Oh wait, missed some of the stuff about guava and koa. Why exactly don't you want a machete?

Maybe a Valiant or Bark River's new Golok?

I second this...
Valiant makes some nice Goloks for cheap, and the Bark River one is on my list...
Do not get the XXL survival golok if you have very heavy cutting to do, as it is a bit thinner than the others, though is it still way thicker than a normal mach., so it will cut a lot better than one of those on things with bark. Old Jimbo's site has a lot of info... Start here for a review of the survival golok...
