I'm leaving for Argentina for about two months in in June, and wanted to get some recommendations for any good writing notebooks. I like moleskines, but i want something a bit nicer. The things that i am looking for are durability, good quality, smooth paper, simplicity, etc.

Thanks in advance,
Noah

Moleskin is about as good as they get, unless you have one handmade to your specs.

I've got two journals made by Under The Mango Tree. They are absolutely beautiful pieces of art; hand-tooled leather covers (my larger one has a stone inset into the cover - see below), handmade paper, and once you fill it you can send it back to them and they'll refill it. Now, note that these books don't match really any of your qualities, heh; the paper is handmade and therefore rough not smooth, the decorations and leather strap wrap and etc mean they're a long way from simplicity, and unfortunately I haven't beaten on mine so I don't know about durability. They are so drool-worthy, though.

For smooth paper, simplicity, durability, excellent quality journals... y'know who I know I can always depend on and in fact have depended on for almost ten filled journals now, some of which I carried and used every single day? Moleskine. Sorry man, I just haven't found better. I have beat the shit out of them and they abide.

Moleskins are the best things out there as far as simple, functional not books, there is an option on the cover material, and there is a hard a soft cover material. I like the soft cover option, it’s better for carrying it in your pocket.

Thanks everyone! BRL, I took a look at some of the "Under the Mango Tree" Notebooks, and there are a few that i really like. The Roughian Journal Is really reeling me in. And Handforged, those "right in the rain" journals look really interesting as well. Maybe I'll just have to get one of each to pair with my moleskine for the trip, and just see which i end up using the most!

Though I cannot find it online, I purchased a notebook called "Author's". Its in a classic journal style, by that I mean its bound by leather and secures with a flap and leather cord.

What type of writing instrument will you be using? If it's a fountain pen, especially one with anything but a fine to extra fine nib, Moleskines and WriteInRain are FAR from desirable. What is your budget and preferred size (number and size of pages)? Do you like lines, grid, dotted grid, or blank? If not blank, what spacing? What color paper? Do you want extra smooth paper or textured? Do you need archival or lignan free paper? Do you want a certain style of closure?
All the questions I ask will limit your range of possibilities.

I'll be using mainly ballpoint and gel pens, my budget is probably around $50, but i'd be willing to go a bit over that if its really worth it. I like slimmer width notebooks, so not a whole lot of pages. I like lined, light color or white paper, i like my paper to be as smooth as possible. I dont need any certain type of paper, and im open to closure styles. Thanks.

Thanks to everyone for the responses, I'm seeing quite a few that i like!

How about for use with a Lamy Safari (fine nib, on the dry side) using Noodler's Polar Black? I'm looking for a small, pocketable notebook with any type of closure, single ~18pt spaced lines, white/off-white smooth paper, on a low (<$20) budget. I would be surprised if such a product exists in this price range, but couldn't hurt to ask! Thanks in advance!

No closure but otherwise awesome for the price is the Apica CD5. Thin, smooth, no feather paper that is durably put together.

moleskin or write in the rain, if your going to be in an urban area the moleskin is an icon for a reason they handle the abuse of constant carrying in stride and look good doing it, if your out in back country rite in the rain is as good as it gets get one of the sets that is a notebook cordura cover and all weather pen and your good for anything. I have used both extensively and they are both excellent, both have little reference guides in them proportional to the size of the books.

All around great notebooks.
