I am in the market for a good upright vacuum to replace my 2 year old Eureka that just burned out. The biggest problem is my dog which has a ton of hair and sheds constantly (I think that is what burned out the old one).

Know of any good ones with alot of power?

We keep our dogs in at night in our bedroom and have similar issues with shedding, so my wife and I decided to get a vacuum for just the bedroom.

We picked up a Dirt Devil Featherlite Bagless (12 amp) for about $100 at Sears, since we didn't want to get another expensive vaccuum for just one room. Well, we were amazed at how well it picks up 3 dogs' worth of hair on a daily basis. The attachments are not the greatest, but for floor use it's as good as our $400 Hoover.

Not having to change out bags is a plus, and the canister is clear so you can see what you've just picked up

I believe that there are more expensive Dirt Devil models, and if they are better than the entry-level one we got, then they should be excellent performers.

We have an Oreck that while not having all the bells and whistles of some others it does seem very well built and they will service them also.

As a bonus it came with a quite powerful portable with attachments.:)

I purchased that Oreck portable a couple of years ago, and in a word, it "sucks", but not in the desired fashion. If this unit is representative of Oreck products, I would not take one were it offered to me free !!!

Kenmore 32213 (32212). Powerful unit with HEPA filter and onboard tools. Excellent historical repair record as well.

I'm a Eureka user, too! I haven't had any problems yet (5 years old) but I don't vacuum on a daily basis, either. Checking out 'Consumer Reports' and they give good ratings for the Hoover WindTunnel Self-propelled Ultra U6425-900. Also give good ratings for Kenmore Progressive 30512, & Progressive Direct Drive 30912. CR also mentions that Eureka is very good but is one of the more repair-prone brands. Good luck & catch all those dust bunnies!
