This was a cool project,It was forged from a piece of 3/4 inch 60 grade rebar..The rebar worked great for this,It hardened very nicely and took a great temper..Lot's of material for these laying around.
Any comments.

Dandy Bruce, I had no idea rebar would harden and temper. Will it all or is it a grade 60 magical thing? Curious how it would work with mild on some damascus patterns. Great looking hawk! Terry

Thanks ....
I haven't mixed it with mild only, but I have put it into my Frontier style Damascus and it works great.I don't put any mild steel in my Damascus except a piece now and then in the frontier amascus that will be high layer count.Don't like the thought of mild steel in the cutting edge....
Some no grade will harden but not all as far as I know only the 60 grade works for knives and the 40 grade doesn't harden. The 60 grade seems to be a great steel for Hawks though.
Guess you could say it is a good as the crow bar the guy bought for $.99 that was made in China and then forged it into a blade and then won 2nd place in the cutting competition at Batsons this year..You just never know what will work untill you try.

Bruce, Cool lookin Hawk! How did you put the hole in for the handle? Can you make one of these without the power Hammer?

Bruce,Yes this can be done without the Power hammer..I just use a hot cut chisel then a drift to set the eye. Then a fullering tool to set were I want the head and cutting blade to start then forge it out from there..

that is a great looking hawk! have you thought about a price with the tiger maple halfting?

Way cool!
Is that the rebar pattern showing around the handle?
And the friendly looking bird head 'head hammer' is very clever :)

Rhino,I may have to try a small Price style with the curly maple handle..
Yes Ebbtide that is the rebar X pattern round the eye of the Hawk.I left it on purpose just to prove that I did use rebar..
