Good using Trapper or Stockman

For the past few years I have been carrying some "high speed tactical folder" and fixed blades. I retire from the military after this trip to the sandbox is over and really would like to find a good trapper or stockman to carry every day. While I will probably still carry a tactical of some sort it seems like with some of the anti-knife types running loose that a traditional design would be less offensive.

With Camillus and Schrade out of business, who makes good traditional knives that are meant to be used? Buck has a couple of models of stockman and a trapper. IMHO Case is more for collectors from what I have seen or do they still make using knives that are good for every day use?

Are you interested in stainless or carbon steel Or does it matter?

Case still does make great users, especially their CV (carbon) knives.

Queen does also, and in D2 which is a great steel, although lately it seems like their factory edges need redone once you get one. Queens newest Amber CCarved stag bone knives are really nice looking.

You didn't specify USA made, so I'll toss out Boker as well, they are making some great pocketknives.

Boker Tree Brand makes a good Stockman. I have one and it's a good quality knife.

Try a Case in CV! You won't be dissapointed.

Great Eastern Cuttlery makes some great trappers as well. I've got 2 in 1095 and love them, I think they also offer some models in 440C.

case knives in CV are great users, and their tru-sharp stainless is a great choice also. I though Case pretty much were just collecting blades also especially the stainless ones, but I was wrong. They are great quality, sturdy users with good fit and finish and pretty decent steel, I feel it is hard to go wrong with a case, Case pocket knives are mostly what I edc right now. Another good choice is Boker, all the Boker knives I have owned are very well put together, and a great value. I often edc a Boker trapper or barlow. Will62, thanks for serving and stay safe over there. Joe

I recently got a Boker copperhead (similar to a two-blade trapper). It is a quality piece and quite elegant - perfect for when I'm dressed up. They have nice trappers too.

CASE Trapper is a very workmanlike knife, far from being collectors' safe queens...Also the size down, the Mini-Trapper offers even more practicality for EDC carry.

Queen Cutlery's Bone-Stag handle series feels very good to use and look at, but the D2 steel (I find) dull and tough to sharpen, see no advantage over stainless with it.

Böker (Germany/Argentina) offer some very decent knives too.

Whatever you choose, I doubt it will be your last 'traditional' or authentic folder/ slip-joint! Welcome on board!

Buck still makes a Trapper I believe, the Queen gets my vote for a good edc user, I regularly carry a Queen Congress.:D

I've got both a Case Trapper and a Mini-Trapper. The Mini-trapper rides with me nearly every day. Today I tossed in the CV, yellow handled, peanut while my wife and I went out for a day. The lil peanut came in handy cutting a steak too. Tender steak, but the steak knife they gave us was mostly worthless.

For the money I think a Case or a Boker are the way to go. I have a Case stainless mini-trapper that has been a great EDC knife for years. Now I have a collection of traditional EDC knives and Boker in carbon steel usually gets the nod. I like the character that carbon steel takes on but Case's stainless has served me well.

Will,

Here is a wonderful Case XX that is a recently made medium size Trapper that I have been utilizing as an every day carry since I got it. I also have multiple Stockmans of all types that you may want to consider as well. These are great knives and don't let anyone lead you astray about the usefulness and longevity. Case knives are users and always have been and likely always will be. This one has shaving sharp tru-sharp steel and is beautiful to boot. Please email me with any questions at veritas_group@bellsouth.net

God Bless and please come home to us soon,

Anthony

I agree that case and queen are good users and those would be my choice for real "traditonal" otherwise I say that a good alox Victorinox is the way to go.

Anthony,
NICE pictures and here next to me on the desk is the selfsame knife:DAnd its twin in Apple Green.....The Wharncliffe blade is right up my street and the mini/mid/demi/sub/half trapper size makes a total EDC:thumbup::thumbup:

Thanks for the input. Going to both the Bass Pro and Shepherd Hills stores when I get back this fall.

Boker Tree Brand makes a good Stockman. I have one and it's a good quality knife.

Just ordered one myself.

Go with Case, Mooremaker, German Eye Brand, Boker, you won't go wrong.

My preference is for the 1095 or CV steel. If you must have a shiny blade for the rest of your life, go stainless steel.

I have a good number of slipjoints, and rotate them occasionally, but I carry my Case CV trapper (chestnut bone, what a beauty) the most. If I had to get rid of all of them but one, this'd be the one I kept. It's made in 2000, when some people think that Case's QC was lax, but it's the most solid, reliable user I have, and the fit & finish puts my Queens & Schatts to shame.
Case CV trapper!

I have a boker stockmen with carbon blades, red smooth bone handels in my EDC rotation I love it,its a very nice knife.good luck, stay safe,& thanks for your service.
