Along the same lines as my "how many knifes do you need" thread:

What distinguishes a "good" knife from a great knife?

I think is a good knife is one that is technically good - nice grinds, tight fit and finish...a knife that shows attention to detail.

A great knife, in my veiw is one in which a maker takes the technical elements of a good knife, and creates a design that flows, uses materials that create an overall composition that really "speaks" to me.

If I own it "Great", if I don't "Good". :)

The truely great knives are the ones where the maker not only produces a technically fit product, but also invest the time to provide quality customer service, and develop an active secondary market. When you buy a knife for $200, and it does everything you wanted it to do, its a good knife. When you actually enjoyed ordering the knife, talking to the maker, and taking delivery; and the knife appreciates on the resale market to $500, then that is truely a great knife.
