Well, I am ashamed to admit that I avoided SAKs for a long time cuz I thought they were cheap gimmicks. But after seeing so many of them on the EDC thread in general, I looked into them a bit more, and found out that they are really nice knives, and the low prices are not indicative of quality.

Now, a week later, I have picked up a Vic Super Tinker, A Vic red Cadet, A Vic Soldier, and just today on the way home, a Vic Signature (the one with the light and pen, plus the beautiful clear scales).

The Super Tinker is a bit heavy, so I put it in my car as a backup knife for now. The Soldier and the Cadet are fighting for pocket space (the Cadet is super light, but the Soldier feels so tough for a SAK). The Sig is riding my keychain now (my very first keychain knife, just too many nice features in such a small package).

One extra note, I LOVE the Alox handles, they look great and feel awesome in the hand. Really wish I had picked one of these up years ago, I have already used them for a ton of things (including cutting up pork chops on two occasions, something I have never done before with an EDC blade). Thanks Bladeforums :)

Glad you like them, cause theyre really excellent-quality pocket knives. My first knife, at 8-9 years old, was a SAK my dad got me. And i still got it, although ive packed it away cause im worried it might get lost. Cant remember what the model name is, there are so many to remember!

Great to hear. You've added some very useful tools to your EDC.

The alox models are both tough and useful, which are probably two of the main reasons why the Victorinox Soldier was issued to the Swiss soldiers for decades. The Dutch army too used that knife for many years and still uses Victorinox tools, but they sometimes choose a different manufacturer.

Last year I introduced two friends of mine to SAK's during a camping trip. Like many people they knew about them, but never used one. I bought them both a Victorinox Huntsman and during our camping trip I showed them what they could do with it. Opening cans with food, preparing wood for camp fire, making wooden tent pegs, repairing a piece of kit with the screw drivers and many other things. They were really surprised! Later one of them bought himself a Victorinox Climber for EDC.

yay Bob! I was the same way, never gave them much thought until I was older, what were we thinking! ;)

SAKs are great little knives. Functional, high quality, inexpensive and they won't scare anyone if you pull one out.

In my opinion, the best thing about them is how collectable they are. They have so much history behind them (I think Victorinox/Wenger are the oldest knife makers around. Don't quote me on that though), so many different models and a good sized collection won't cost you a fortune :D

Glad to hear you changed your mind. My very first knife was a SAK, and thats all I bought up to about 15 years ago, when I started getting into folders.

I couldn't live without my Vic Climber - it's on me every day without fail!
