Who makes a quality large wharncliffe folder? Not a modified wharny but something with a completely straight plain edge. looking for something around 3.5 to 4" blade and prefer either a good solid lockback or axis type lock... frame lock would be ok but I'd like to avoid liner locks.

The largest true wharncliffe (stabby, straight edge) that I'm immediately aware of is the Benchmade 425 Snody Gravitator (3.5" blade). But it's a linerlock. Although, from what I remember handling one, it's a pretty thick (titanium) liner with strong lockup.

All the other true wharncliffes I can think of are only 3" long. The Spyderco 93mm Rescue or Atlantic Salt are longer, but they're sheepsfoots, not wharncliffes, but I'm sure there's somebody (STR, Tom Krein, etc) that could grind it down and make it stabby for you.

check out the wharncliff trappers and the swayback jack from case. those will site ur needs nicely i think.

If you were looking for a slip I'd say the Urban Wharnie from Spyderco... Can't think of any others off the top of my head.

The Spyderco Centofante 4 a pretty slick knife, although the blade is only 3" Priced right also.:D

I have the limited edition version of the Gravitator and it rocks. It's a discontinued model, but I'm sure you can find them on the secondary market easily enough. It's a super sturdy design.

I second the Centofante 4 recommendation, even if the blade is shortish for your needs.
Another option: really excellent wharncliffe folders are made by the Swiss craftsmen at Klotzli. These ones have a blade of 3.25" (the left one) or 3.5": the right one, I have it and it's superlative (think Chris Reeve precision), even if it has a very slight "belly" compared to a straigth wharncliffe.

A leek is too small?

If you can find an old CRTK Mirage Grey Ghost in AUS8, Linerlock

I’ve been looking at wharncliffe knives, and if you don’t mind me asking, what would you plan on using it for?
What’s the benefit as apposed to a different blade shape?

I love wharnies because the blade is perfectly straight. It allows quick touch ups on the strop, as well as stones. You have no curves to worry about keeping bevel the same. I also like the look of it. I use it for any and all purposes. Hope that helps, it may just be personal taste.

I agree with cj65. I recently picked up a Case Large Trapper with a Wharncliffe blade in place of the normal Spey blade, and I really love it. The Wharnie blade just seems to work so well for so many different every-day tasks, its become one of my favorite EDC knives.

Plus 10000.
BEST liner lock bar none. You could drive a small nail into wood with the spine on that thing!
More of a frame-lock with scales.

I'll third that. I think a Wharncliff is a fantastic EDC profile.

Thanks, I asked cause I’ve been thinking of adding one to my edc rotation but was concerned that when I lost “belly” I might loose some practicality.

Agreed. I kind of wish that I had gotten a regular Gravitator instead of the limited one, though, 'cause it's too pretty to used hard! :foot: :D

That thing is a TANK! It's just too bad the design came out before the big Wharnie boom that's going on at the moment. I think it could have had a little more of a market now.
