What are good woods that can be found in the southeast U.S. for making fireboards?

I know cottonwood is an excellent choice and I have had great results with it here in California. But does it grow in Florida?

All information is greatly apperciated.

Thanks, Jeff

I'm in the North East, so take this with a grain of salt. Members the Primitive Skills Group recommend sycamore, cypress, elderberry, syringa (or lilac,) big leaf maple, spruce, balsam fir, incense cedar, sagebrush, redwood, box elder, saguaro cactus and tulip poplar as fireboards. I haven't tried these. They also recommend bear grass, sagebrush and red cedar as spindles. Again, I haven't tried these. I've used norway maple, white cedar and willow.

i have used sycamore and sassafras with good results, there is a eastern cottonwoood that is supposed to be ok, but i havent had time to try it out yet, if you can dent it with your fingernail give it a try, if it wont dent it may not work, if it crushes under your nail it may not work also.
