Google trend: Spyderco vs others

DaveH,
Interesting website.
I noticed that the only 2 cities east of the mississippi (sp) are Atlanta, GA and Washington DC.

yeah, I'm not real sure on the accuracy, but I thought it was interesting.

That is very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

On the Kershaw vs Spyderco issue, my first response would be because Walmart carries many Kershaws vs the Spyderco Native, hence driving up the exposure. But the trend is repeated in Canada, where our Walmarts don't carry a selection of Kershaws, much less Spyderco, as far as I have seen.

I would have guessed Cold Steel sold more knives than Spyderco. But prehaps the search results don't directly corrolate with sales, and all the Spyderco searchers are "lookers".

On playing around with this, it seems there is no reason that is would not be precise (it's just a counter).

A major problem, however, is that search keywords don't exactly belie the information the searcher wants. For instance, if I wanted info about Spyderco, I could use the keywords "Spyderco", "Spyderco knives", or "Spyderco knife"... Since nothing else really has the name Spyderco, you don't get much extraneous search results. However, if you wanted Kershaw, there are people, places, and things named Kershaw as well. So to exclude those, you would really have to use a modifer, say "Kershaw knives". However, there are many such possible modifers, so to have a good comparison, you really have to compare "Spyderco" with the sum of "Kershaw knives", "Kershaw knife", "Kershaw cultery", "Kershaw USA" and all such keywords, which is more complicated analysis.

that's a good point, if there was a country singer named kershaw for example, or a good looking woman actress named kershaw, that would throw things off.
