Been having some problems with my landline lately and got me to thinking some sort of backup would be nice. I think I may be the last person on the planet who doesn't have a cell phone. :D
While I lose dial tone at times, my DSL still works.

Looking for a alternative calling method, I came across Google Voice. Looks pretty good and apparently is free.
Anyone have experience with it? Any negatives?

I also gave my mic to a neighbor who needed it, so I was looking for a replacement.
Came across the Logitech USB Desktop Microphone on Amazon for ~$20.
Anyone familiar with it?

Any comments or suggestions welcome.

I've used google voice for both local and international calls, it works well as long as your internet connection is performing well. VoIP across the internet will always be dependent on the network performance.

You have to buy calling credit with a credit card and then you can make calls to landlines just by choosing the destination country and typing the phone number.

The main downside I noticed is that it may not be as cheap for local calls as a land line, depending on the calling plan you purchase from your telco.

Also tax is added to the calling credit purchase at the checkout.

I just used the built in microphone and speaker on my laptop, but I have used sennheiser USB headsets for other VoIP uses and they work OK.

I have been using Google Voice for over a year now....I forward it to my wireless and have Google Voice to handle my voicemail and text messages. I use a pay as you go Net10 phone to avoid contracts and I don't use wireless that much anyway. When I'm home/office at computer, I simply handle the calls on computer without it going to the wireless number. It works with Gmail/Google talk. I have both Voice and Gmail open in tabs at same time and flip back and forth. Its a little different but the call quality seems good. I use the built in mic on my laptop...quality seems to be ok with those I have asked. I have an older Logitech headset with separate mic/headphone connections that works well also. I would imagine the USB Logictech device you are thinking of will work fine.
