google web accelerator

I hadn't heard about it until your post. I've downloaded it and am trying it now.

The only small concern is that it states that it sends personally identifiable information to Google. One has to accept this in order to DL the utility.

I already run a paid-for "Go-faster" application called Onspeed. I'll see how the two work together...or otherwise.

I think it's really only useful for dialup/slow connections. And, as mentioned, it means anything you view on the web is kept record of at google... FOREVER.

After a couple of hours' surfing, I thought I'd see how much time I'd "saved." I checked the performance data and read:

Not enough data to generate a report.

Also, it keeps on disconnecting itself for some unknown reason.

That - and the privacy issue - means I'm going to get rid of it.

YMMV

These "web accelerators" can basically be placed in two catagories, those that sort of work and those that don't work at all. Even the ones that work will only be of any help tp a dialup connection anyway, so if you have broadband don't bother.

Basically the way the work, the ones that do anyway, is by keeping the pages you visit most often stored away. This prevents you from having to download any of the information again the next time you visit the website, instead it is coming from a local source at a faster transfer rate. There are a few problems with this mehtod though. First off is that anything that changes regularly (say a news feed or forums) can't really benefit as it will need to be downloaded at each visit in order to be up to date.

Thanks for the information. Based on what I've read so far it doesn't appear that it will be of any help to me.

I'd heard that Google alreadey captures personal data and tracks searches.

I can't remember where I read that.

If you are on DSL or Cable or any high speed option , you do not need any sort of "web accelerator" , you are not going to notice a bit of difference since most bottlenecks you will come across are on the web servers side of the page you are viewing and not on your end.

Also , if I let the fact that google records everything , 'forever' bother me , I would not look up 3/4s of what I look up , who cares... If "they" want me that bad "they" can come and finish it.
Privacy is such a misnomer , these days , your entire mind and soul is up for grabs... from the day you are conceived you are a statistic and a nine digit number.

It's true, and easy to prove. Set your homepage to google, and then run adaware.
Then open your browser, run adaware again, and -POOF!- tracking software will be detected.

(this can be used to find out if any site is giving you tracking software)

Every search engine tracks some statistics. They need this information to improve their service. The question is: do they keep this information in such a way that it is personally-identifiable? Can they say, "Chuck Gollnick searched for the following words: A, B, C..." Or can they just say, "X number of people have searched for the following term in the last month, which is Y% of total searches, and of the X, Z% then went to this certain website."
