Hi all,

Totally new to this.

Recently bought an old goosewing hatchet at auction.

Handle is a home-made replacement curved to the right (looking forward from the end of the handle).

Bevelled one side. Sharpened blade edge is about 10 " long, and very slightly curved.

Stamp is a bit faint, but appears to be "TSG".

How best to pursue identification?

single bevel and offset handle would be for hewing. head like this?

I think the handle on this was homemade. I'll be replacing it with an offset one (someday;))

If your axe was made in Ontario you'll likely find something about the maker in Gary French's book "Axe making in Ontario: in the settlement period" pub. 2010. You might be able to find it in a library, or else Lee Valley sells it.

Or ask this man wdmn! He's already peeled to fruition the layers off one 'Ontario-made' onion (a really old broad axe) already.

Thanks. Toronto Public Library is pretty comprehensive, and I know a Lee Valley tool outlet not too far away.

Will let you know what I find.

I don't think that one was made in north America. Some of the European members of this forum might be able to help.
