Due to the recent advertising blitz, I'm interested in a parka or pullover with the latest Gore-tex XCR material, any brand. Has anyone had experience with this? Right now I'm thinking of something on the lightweight side, that could be used as a shell in cooler temperatures. If no one has had experience with the Gore-tex XCR material, I welcome input from those who have used any sort of Gore-tex outerwear, especially regarding functionality and breathability. Thanks in advance.

It would be helpful to know where and how you plan to use it. I haven't used the new stuff, but the old Gore-Tex material worked OK for light Sierra thundershowers. On the other hand, many guides in Alaska tell you not to bring it. They use the Helly Hansen storm gear. They say that once you get the double and triple layer Gore-Tex that's sturdy enough to handle their conditions, it no longer breathes much anyway. Might as well use the cheaper, tougher garments. I followed their advice and the Helly Hansen has served me well in Alaska. However, it would be very heavy and bulky for backpacking in milder conditions.
