Hi all. An excellent point was brought up in another thread, and I wanted to bring up again in it's own thread because it makes a lot of sense. It's this: United/Gil knives have probably turned more people into knife knuts than any other knife maker in history. Yeah, so some of them might be "fantastic" but hey, if they bring people closer to understanding more about knives, the less we have to worry about anti-knife legislation, right?

That's true. Knife folks capping on United is no better than gun folks capping on Jennings, or Glock or Perazzi for that matter. While we might have some reservations about design or quality, we certainly don't want to spoil the thrill of The Knife.

I know the first knife I bought is not the knife I choose to carry now that I have a bit more knowledge. People will discover quality for themselves if they appreciate quality. If they don't appreciate quality, why bother trying to cultivate such an appreciation in 'em? Don't try to teach a pig to sing, son.

Yes, come to us, owners of Gil Hibben knives, yes, of others purchased at strange bazaars next to VCR's, of knives costing $13 and even $3!

I'm going to have to disagree.

Yes, certainly I agree that their knives will help _some_ people turn into knife knuts.

IMO, that's outweighed by:

1) Sensational advertising.

2) Outrageous prices for what you get.

3) Promotion of fantasy knife, violence,
mindset. ( Ok maybe a reach on this one )

4) Do you see them promoting reasonable
knife use and knife education?

5) Because of the fantasy designs, it INCREASES the possiblity of legislation. How do you think the typical politicial/sheeple would react to seeing all those swirly curves and sharp points?

Nope, IMO, UC fantasy has a negative impact on the respectable collecting and use.
