gosh these "new designs" look familiar!

  :p

Yes....

I do like the Colabro and Guardsman.....nice lines.

$$$$, though...!! !!

Yeah, but i have to say that my khukrambit is more pleasing to my eye. I rarely use the finger ring, but i've found that big ol' hunka steel does a good job balancing the knife when i choke up on knife and use the choil. Probably the most solidly built knife that i own in that size class. Excellent design and excellent execution and it obviously shows as the design is cropping up in other knifes. Finally someone see that a new kerambit type knife doesn't -always- have to be a folder;)

The French language has several words that convey the different meanings of "new": never made before; new to me; never used; etc. These knives could be "new" (models this maker never made before) or "new" (not previously owned) or "new" (I invented it!!!!! -- never before seen by sentient beings). Alas, poor 'Merican. We just have to muddle along. ;)

Very nice. Like that Guardsman. ATS-34, sub-hilt fighter with the keramibit ring. There's about 5 different ways to cut with that guy! Beautiful work.

Norm

He makes some nice knives. Familiar? People have been putting holes in knives for quite some time.

this is what the fuss and bother is about, Michael:

We had the kamis for Himalayan Imports make us up a kerambit. Lovely, wouldn't you say?

:D

I agree Danny, I was sad to miss that one. That type of horn is what I really want on my fancy YCS.

I remember those designs -- great meshing of karambit and khuks. I just didn't see the resemblence that much. (besides the hole of course) :)

I agree with Michael, I dont see any similarity between those of the maker and the khuk/kerambit. Is he ring in the end the similarity your trying to convey? Liong Mah has been designing Kerambits for many years so that is moot, the overall design predates him as well. I need to find a pic, but I seem to remember seeing a khukri shaped blade on a ringed knife many years ago.

But the main point here is its all been done before, theres nothing new, just new ways of rehashing an old idea. Bowie, Khuk, Kerambit, Barong, etc etc etc ad nauseum. They've all been done and redone.

I just thought they looked similar from the bolster downwards.
There's no need for people to get defensive.
No offense was implied.

yeah...forum oopsie....I think what Danny was trying to convey was that we (and the kamis) weren't too far off-base after all (concerning the design of this khuk-rambit). You guys probably missed the criticism we got early on that these kerambits were too large and not "traditional" enough.

:footinmou

(when in doubt, you can usually assume DannyInJapan is expressing exuberance over a recent idea/purchase/etc.....:D :p)

no harm, no foul. :) As Dan knows, designs are a verrrrryyy sensitive issue with knifemakers.

oh god that horn one on the left is beautiful.
Who bought that one?
I want it!!!

Didn't the Duck get one of those horn 'bits?

And I agree with you, Danny. I didn't see your post as pointing out copyright violations or something. They just look a lot alike to those of us that had a hand in the HI khukrambit. Lord knows we've borrowed from just about every other knife out there to have the kamis make some interesting stuff. It was just kind of cool that for all practical purposes the khukrambit was done in the vacuum of the Cantina based on what the kamis can and cannot do, yet still came out looking similar to a highend custom (especially if you got one with exotic wood). Peace, brothers. USA, Nepal they're all just purdy sharp things:)

This is news to me. I didnt know that.
Hmmm.
No wonder we got such a response to this thread.

Well, I'd like ot have one of each knife That I have seen in this thread.
I like the HIs and the Doucette ones.

They's purty!

bottom line is there are only so many ways to make any style of knife (or anything, for that matter)...

example: i make kali/escrima fighting sticks and kubotons out of molybdenum disulfide filled nylon 6/6... eric blair, a well known and extremely talented knifemaker also makes fighting sticks (and a bunch of other really cool stuff)... what does he make his sticks out of? nylon 6/6... i suspect he and i use the same material because we both feel it is the best material out there to make these sticks out of, and is very light and tough, extremely fast in the hand, and transmits monstrous quantites of of shock to the target (all important things in a fighting stick)...

eric seems like a very cool guy, but dont know him and ive never spoken with him... i dont know how long he's been making his sticks, but i do know that i started making and selling mine locally and to friends before i happened upon his internet forum and discovered that we had virtually the same product... does this mean that i stole eric's idea, or he stole mine? nope... we both just had the same idea... you know, enough monkeys banging away on typewriters will eventually type out the complete works of shakespere and all that...

whats the point? the point is, as i mentioned, that there are only so many ways to make something... i know this... im sure most other folks do too...

if i had a dollar for every time some other maker beat me to the punch and put something out that i had already drawn designs for but hadnt made, i would be a rich man...

i have seen some people around these parts become downright rabid because some less known maker put out a design that resembled a more well known makers knives (or something else that maker was making)... i think to myself, "man, am i going to have to worry about that when i roll my line out here and on other forums?"... then i say f**k it, and go back to work...

people will buy your product if they like it and it does what its supposed to... people will also buy based on name and reputation... i know that if i buy an HI khukuri it will be tough as nails and devour whatever i throw at it, and it will look good doing it... if jerry hossom makes a khukuri, whos to say it wont be every bit as good as an HI? i know that jerry hossom makes some kick ass knives, so if i have a thing for khukris, and i like jerry's work, i will probably buy one of those too... you guys know how it is, "if i have ONE HI khuk, i want ALL OF THEM!!!" :D

its all subjective... karambits are hot right now... lots of folks are jumping on the bandwaggon and making them... hell, when im finally tooled up after tax season, IM going to be making them too!

by the way, mr. burch, your blades rock!

Yes.....Burch's blade do indeed rock....maybe you'll tease us with a khukuri someday, Michael?

:D

Thanks fellows -- One of these days I'm going to have to forge out a big o' curvy blade out of W-2. :)
