So I have been looking for a good chopper for quite a while, and have bought and sold several before settling on a Gossman Big Boar Tusker. This knife just had the perfect weight, balance, grind, heft, steel (A2) and handle design. This knife is a keeper.

So, it's going to be a little bit before I get out on a good camping trip to test her out, so when a friend mentioned he needed a dying tree to come down, my eyes lit up...

So I decided to break in the Gossman and take a few pics and videos while doing it. I know I'm going to get made fun of for my poor technique, but that's alright...the Gossman made it easy regardless.

Here's the video - it is 3 videos together since I stopped along the way to take pics of the progress.

Afterwards, I chopped it into smaller sections, going through some pretty gnarley knott holes..

It was like I cut a piece of string...perfect edge, no roles, no dings, no chips...

Gossman's are the bomb!!

Good God man, that was some impressive chopping! How bout that forward lanyard? Makes it a hell of alot easier to hang onto the knife. Great job, thanks for posting!

Awesome I love seeing Scott's knives getting used! I always carry my big boar tusker with me here in the big woods.

Wow!
Very impressive. How sharp was the knife afterwards??

It was definitely still sharp, but not razor sharp. However, I have to say that this knife came to me sharper than any other production or custom of this size. It was absolutely shaving sharp upon arrival (still have a bald patch..). So the chopping definitely took it from shaving sharp to just sharp, but with absolutely no dings or rolls of any kind. Not bad at all.. I attributed that to the beefy convex edge, excellent grind and A2 - LOVE that steel...

Yep - forward lanyard makes all the difference when doing chopping like this. Thanks for the awesome chopper! I like how effective this knife is as a chopper at only 9". It feels like it would outperform others with longer blades just due to the overall weight, balance and grind. No wonder the big boar tusker is so popular!

Great looking Gossman and loved the video.

BTW, what is that knife that's riding along on your belt waiting to be used? :D

Thanks! That knife on my belt was one of my other favorite knives, and it just finished getting used to chop down some smaller dead limbs from a larger tree. That's my Ray Laconico camp knife - 6" of 0.25" O1 goodness.. :)
