Hope this is okay to post this...:s

I picked up a Gossman PSK. After Jk named him one of his favorite knife makers I had to check him out and he had a special going. Anyway once I finished I decided the JK EDC was a good comparison and an excuse to post more pictures :p.

First off the designs are different and the purpose so it's not a great comparison but they are roughly the same size, same steel stock (1/8") etc. I have a Rosewood on the Jk and a black walnut on the PSK.

And remember I put the handles on both of them so don't hold it against them :) (sheaths as well - these ones now work as temp holders while I try to find the time and energy to make better ones after getting a lot of good advice about sheaths here on the forum recently-thanks guys!)

What I saw, not going to offer reasons for the differences, we all know that different edges and such have different pros and cons:

I would say I wasn't drawn to the square handle of the PSK at first but after handling it and getting to know it (it's interesting how even in similar styles there is a definite difference int he designs-i think KYturkey re-sized the kephart if I remember into the EDC). But it grew on me and it's pretty cool the way you have a small knife with a full sized knife feeling grip. kind like the Riverwoods companion or the JK Toby's Knife Version 2.0.

the JK Kephart EDC has a smaller handle, not quite a full grip but you don't feel wanting and I have large if skinny hands which doesn't help. It also provides much more blade though.

The Gossman has an 01stamp on the opposite side of the blade (small difference i know) and the makers mark on the other

I thought it was kind cool how they have there makers mark on the opposite sides as each other

I also think Jk favors a thicker grind (unless agreed to do otherwise with the customer where he's all custom :)) the Gossman, at least on this knife, tends towards the thinner taper. It was hard to get a picture of what I'm talking about:

Remember they are both 01 steel and 1/8" thick. Both are sharp as 'eck 9that's heck with the "h" sliced off...because it's so sharp...it's late okay?)

I don't know, i kinda like the thinner grind but as I was reminded recently while having to pry a door open with the JK EDC, sometimes it's best to have more around, rather then less :)

Anyway, thanks for looking.

Great comparison pics. It's nice to see the contrast with other maker's knives. We don't always get that in JK land.

This lets us see why we choose John's knives!

Every time I see your knife I wish I would have known you were not going with a Kephart style handle, I could of given you 1/4" more edge. As for comparing one of mine with one of Scott`s, I`m flattered to even see them in the same photo. I stand by what I say about Scott, he`s a great guy, and a fantastic knifemaker. I`ve owned two of his knives over the years, and if I had the money, a Big Boar Tusker would be mine.

thanks both, John, if I'd have known about the handle I'd have told you :p

I started off thinking I'd to a detailed comparison but honestly couldn't come up with much different in fit and finish and quality. I think maybe the Gossman is taken to a higher shine? The only reason I noticed a difference I the grinds is that it was harder to clamp the Gossman while I worked on finish sanding the handle because it would move in the vice.

Ask me they are both highly crafted pieces of steel. I'm going to go post this over in reviews and such, meant to do that last night but it was late enough I forgot where I was :)

There are few people on this planet that I hold as high a regard for as John and Scott. I've yet to meet Scott but from all I've heard he is the real deal.
I am right there with you John on the Big Boar Tusker. The main reason though is I love the guard he puts on them.

Nice comparison Peter. I picked up both a PSK and the Jr. version several years ago. Great little knives.

I have to dig out an old copy of SWAT Magazine. There is an article in it about small knives, and there is a photo of one of Scott`s PSK`s and my Hiker`s Backup together.

Great comparison of two great knives. I think I like the flats in from of the handle on the JK. I fire I could place a thumb there for some close work. Thanks for your comparison.
