Got a Benchmade 710, please help me modify for tip down carry

Hi, I received a Benchmade 710 the other day, but as I suspected, I just can't get used to the tip up carry. I understand why people like it for front pocket carry, but mine go in my back pocket so I would like to switch the pocketclip to the other side. Has anybody drilled the handle to switch the clip to the other end?

Let us know how you work that out. What stops me from purchasing many a knife (to include the much-beloved 710) is "tip-up" carry.

The only issue you may have(and why I think BM doesn't do this), is that the clip may interfere with the axis mechanism. Please let us know if you manage to get around this and how it's done.

Stretch, I almost agree with you, except I say "What stops me from purchasing many a knife is tip-DOWN carry."

I wish more knives came drilled for 4-position carry, like some Benchmades & Spydercos do.

I'm also wondering about the axis mechanism, I hope it will not be in the way. I may have to pick up a mini drill bit for my dremel, mark the holes and try my best. Anybody have any suggestions of what bit size to use?

Is Zytel easy to drill? Any chance of it melting and causing a problem?

The 710 uses G10 for its handle scales. It drills fine, and don't melt. However, the dust it produces is nasty stuff. Make sure you have an adequate filter or mask to use while working.

THanks, maybe there's a painter's mask around here somewhere. Not sure when I'll be brave enough to try this..I mess things up alot :D

Tip down....tip up.... it's personal taste, of course. I think what got me hooked on tip down was my first "real" folder (BM975) was a tip down. I carried that knife everywhere.... I mean, even when I went somewhere!! :)

Now, I "can;t see it" any other way.

I think that most people who prefer tip down, carry in their back pocket while most people who prefer tip up, carry in their front pockets.

Makes sense, unless they like having to flip the knife around in their hands before deploying it.

Well, that's why I like tip down. I carry it inside the waistband on the right side. If I reach in with my right hand, the knife comes out ready to open. Even if it's in my right-front pocket...same thing. Once you get used to something, you (I) become the old dog who can;t learn a new trick.

persoanlly tip down or up doesnt effect me at all. I can grab it lower down if its tip up and flip it open and if its tip down i can grab it higher up and flip open. I really dont see it as a huge issue. I dont tend to use my wrist to flick open knives. I use the thumb studs or the hole and gently open it. More sheeple friendly and consistant. Just personal opinion of course

ya can open a tip up gently just as eassy as a tip down, i prefer 'up 'cuz i trained mostly weth 'ups, but i do believe that ya can draw 'ups a little quicker, doesnt matter a lot though, but i suppose ya should stay with what ya are used to.

i love pat crawfords stuff, and have a KFF and a perfigo, i never carry them though, they are 'down and i just cant get used to it with out a lot of adjustment.

Of course you can, if it's in your front pocket.

I carry back pocket though, so turning the knife around in your hand to open or "choking up" on it if you carry with it on the inside of your back pocket (not comfortable for sitting) it is not as quick. And quite cumbersome!
