Got a callus on a thumb after opening my Gerber A-F Covert Folder

Well, I was opening and closing my Gerber A-F Covert Black Blade for something about of 20 minutes yesterday and got a huge callus on my thumb in the result. I don't know what's wrong here but this knife is such stiff against other knives like combat pistol has more stiff bolt than toy pistol. Is it a true military oriented folder knife or something that's why it is that stiff?

You can't complain about a "combat" knife giving you a callus...

I kid :p

Well I am not complaining I simply don't know what to do in order to use the knife and not damage my thumb while opening it. I like this knife very much in general though.

Man up and deal with it. If a woman compliments you on how soft and smooth your hands are, it's not a compliment. You could have muscles like Schwarzenegger, but if your hands can't sand wood without sandpaper, you ain't a real man. When you shake another man's hands, do you want to feel a soft limp noodle, or an iron vice?

At least you're not this bad..... I did this for fun last year, but it really shows off the sickness....

Seriously? Be glad your skin is doing what it's supposed to do. Soft lily-white hands are girly. Do some real work.

Strange responses. As usual in reviews folders get commended for smooth action, not for being real stiff and hard to open... I really don't see why any folder should be stiff/hard to open. Regardless how tactical/tacticool/high speed etc it is. IMHO it is a production or design defect and that's all to it.

It is not the question of men hands Vs. girls hands it's the question of how fast the deployment is. It is not enough fast for such sort of a knife. Design is great, blade shape is great, steel is great, handle is very good. But folding works kinda slow. You fold it open, fix with the Walker safety lock, and here you go here is the perfect knife. I think it is the fault of those opening studs. For example opening using Spyderco round hole for me is lightning fast.

^ this is the the truth. There are a lot of people that have complained vigorously about all manner of opening mechanism. Be it a thumbstud, nail nick, opening hole, button, etc. It has made me believe that these complaints are more often made by people that Lack a bit of common sense overall. After seeing literally dozens and dozens of those threads, it gets old. Things like "the Spydie Hole cuts my thumb and it hurts", makes me say wow....among other things.

That is like the anatomical chart for a workman's thumb. Perfect.

Well, all other things aside I would suggest adjusting the pivot a bit. I have had A-F Covert and was not impressed, so got rid of it. But one thing for sure - it was very smooth to open and close. Loose the screw a bit and try some oil - that may help. Though I heard the quality of it slipped a bit further.

Have you taken it apart yet? There are a few things you might be able to do, adjusting the pivot as already mentioned, a good cleaning and re-oiling might help some. I don't have a A-F folder, but I have taken apart other folders and sanded/polished out the pivot area on the tang and liners; as well as clean up the accompanying washers.

Congrats on that callous, now you just need 9 more for the other finger tips, as well as some for your palms. By then you will feel pretty invincible.

Something is wrong with that knife, I have two of them and they both open smoothly. Yes try the pivot screw that may do it. There is no excuse for the knife to be stiff like that, it should not have left the factory, Gerber QC screwed up on that one. Can you send it back for replacement or have you had it for a while? I have sent stiff opening/closing knives back for replacement or refund a couple times.

The situation is the following here either I open and use the knife "from time to time" only or thumb gets so damaged during the opening process so I have to put the knife away for several days and cure the callus. I just cannot use it anymore as the thumb pains. Or use it with the left hand (I am right-handed). The opening stiffness of this knife reminds me about those old folding knives you had to pull the blade out with one hand fix it while holding with another. Spyderco Military is very high somewhere in space comparing to that.
