Unfortunately I ordered a 18" AK......

now i have a problem on my hands, I dont know if i want to send this back and get what i originally ordered or just keep this....

I already have a chiruwa from an unknown non HI kami, which ive rehandled, and although the HI one is much better finished, its a whole lot thinner, and therefore a whole lot lighter....

essentially what im after is your opinions on which is the better knife, the chiruwa or the 18 incher...id make a poll but it seems this forums doesnt have that ability, or im just blind...

also, this knife has "L.B." on it, from the kami marks guide this seems to be made by bura..

I am not sure one is better than the other, really. It depends on your intended uses and needs.
I tend to like the 18" and longer sizes, myself. I like the feel of the big ones I guess.
The only true answer is to own both, I guess. ;) I am no help at all!

Hehehe...Im with ArchAngel here, own both. :D Never hurts to have a back up, or even a backup for your back up, or a back ups back ups back up :D

If you're trying to limit your khuk collection (a lost cause, I'll warn you ahead of time), please tell us what you are planning on using it for. We might be able to give more better answers then.

The 18" is a much heftier chopper, and easily replaces any hand axe I've used, and more. The chiruwa is obviously for lighter work, such as delimbing (trees).

Both a lot of fun.

I'll be using it for choppping up to 10 inch limbs/trees. so far my ebay special has been up to the challenge but the HI is much lighter so im not realy sure how well it will do...

Rusty would be proud:)

I dunno. Two different animals for two different jobs. The 18"er is a chopper. The 16.5" Chiruwa is a jack-of-all-trades. If i could only have one, then i would go with the 18" AK...then again, if i only could have one i would have stopped this madness years ago:D Give it some time to grow on you. If you don't like it, send it back. The khuks always find their rightful owners.

I'd hold out for the heavier blade then.

Whether you return the chiruwa depends on how much you like it for it's own sake. And maybe a few other silly factors like money, approval of mate (optional, but recommended), etc.

Depends, what length is the Chiruwa? If you ordered an 18" AK and received a 16-1/2" Chiruwa AK then tell Miss Yangdu and send it back for replacement. Some guys swear by the Chiruwa and it's a good khuk but personally I like the stick tangs better myself.

it measures just under 17", i just sharpened it up and took it out back and it somehow seems to chop a bit better then the thicker ebay one...so methinks this is a keeper. I'll get a 18" when i get more moolah.

Personally, I'd keep it.
There are those who swear by the Chiruwa AK. And remember, it's the knife that if ever broken you get two back. Raghorn and others swear it outcuts the 18" AK. Since yours is almost 17" well....

I like them both. If it feels right in your hand keep it.

Great images, beautiful blade by the Royal Kami, and the perfect size to use/carry/admire.

The chappe (or pointy brass thing at the bottom) will come off with moderate heat to melt the laha (icky Nepal gluestuff) and can be reattached later, should you chose.

You could use this blade alone for the rest of your life and not be handicapped in utility. It is about the "normal" Nepali knife size, which I'm told is somewhere between 14-17 inches.

Nicely done.

but the "best" question is a bit like asking a carpenter which is better, a hammer or a saw...in any case, I think you did the right thing by using and keeping it, and you can later get the Ang Khola for the really heavy lifting...I am positive I would enjoy having that knife myself, and pretty positive you shall, too.....life is good......
