Today i bought a spyderco delica 4.

This was my first spyderco proper. I had a spyderfly and lost it about 7 months ago. Never really even looked for it or considered it much of a loss (unlike my combat karambit which has been MIA for a little over 2 months and i still look for it everyday, cause i love it :(). The design on it just never seemed all that good and it kinda put me off spydercos.

As i prepare to go into the military (i leave the 19th) as i recently catalogued all my knives. I realized that the cheapest knife i own cost me over 100 dollars. Also as i draw near my enlistment i get increasingly paranoid of legal trouble (i signeds up for the R.I.P contract and if you get into any legal trouble you can forget it, espeacially after that stunt those rangers pulled robbign a bank). So all of my knives were either illegal, "tactical" or to expensive for me to carry.

Even though i ship the 19th i decided that i should get a knife to edc. Its less than a month but hey i feel naked without a knife, and of course its well another knife :D.

So i set a limit on how much to spend and went to the local surplus store. For some reasons surplus stroes seem to peddle mostly crap :barf:. So my options were fairly limited. It finally drew down to either a kabar TDI or a delica 4, I decided what the heck and bought the delica. A delica 4 with partial serrations FRN handles and v8-10 steel. THey couldnt even find the box for it so i carried it out of the store clipped to my pocket.

MY first concern with buying an FRN handled spyderco was that the handle would be too light to do a "chicago drop style opening". I was pleasantly surprised to discover the embeded liners. It provides just the right amount of weight to preform a chicago drop opening while the spyderhole proved to give a great grip while opening. this was a double positive for me:thumbup:

The blade was shave sharp right out of the store and has a great geometry to it. Sal is a designing genius. The knives are not aestetichally appealing but it cuts great.

The pocket clip is sturdy and well thought out, and the FRN is grippywhile not being uncomfortable.

THe lock-up is tight and there is NO BLADE PLAY
For its size this knife is alot togher than its appearance and name implies. The action is alsop incredibly smooth for a lock back knife.

Even though this knife has only been in my pocket for about 8 hours it has already really grown on me. It is a very well thought out knife.

My only gripe is its small size but they didnt have an endura and it does make it more sheeple freindly so no gripe there

Now this is where im going to go off on a tangent so if you dont like tangents you can stop now:

The thing i find so great about this knife is its functionality. Benchmade really appears to have fallen off in this regards. BM seems to be the exact opposite of spyderco. Great, well thought out bali's, and not sogreat folders ( with some exceptions like the rukus, and skirmish)

Benchmades aproach to knife making appears to be veering more into aestetichs of their knives rather than there functionality. Which makes sptdercos so refreshing to me. They are very functional cutting tools and are designed as such. There is nothing on this knife that shouldn't be there. Its not flashy and its not something that i feel will be scratched up easily, or that ill preticuraly mind when i do scratch it up. Its a great user. Benchmade could take a que on its folder designs from sal and his staff

That was alot longer than i expected.

All around a great knife. If you dont already have a spyderco get one. If you do buy another.

Glad you are liking the Delica 4. I agree, it is an amazing knife. You stated that the knife is not aesthically appealing to you, since this is your first Spydie I understand, but you will soon realize the beauty of Spyderco and know that one is never enough. Stay safe.:)

Oh i think i already understand i beleive the beauty of a knife is more in its ability to be used than gaudy things like ivory or stag horn.

Oh one other gripe. The blade is a thin enough that it worries me. Not for sd but more for abuse type work. A blade doesnt have to be too thick for an SD blade. Actually sometimes the thinner the better as they tend to slide right into people. But i worry that i wil break off the tip somehow. Probably by dropping it :).

I have a thing against thin blades. I really dont like things thinner than 1/5 of an inch.

Don't ever get a fully serrated one. It can make you believe there ARE no other knives. I just hauled off an old dishwasher today and had to cut off the corrugated nylon drain hose and forgot what I was using and actually put some ....effort... into it. Naturally, the SE Delica went through before I knew it and made the hose pop up into my face.
Gotta remember on a serrated edge that nearly NO effort is needed to cut stuff.
Now if it were to be used as an SD knife, ya gotta be aware that it will be THROUGH an opponent's clothing as soon as it touches cloth, leather, denim or whatnot.

:)

spydercos are great knives, i've had a couple of delicas and liked them a lot. the only thing about the delica is it's a little small for my taste. i edc'd an endura for quite a while and was very pleased. the 4th gen knives are supposed to be quite nice but i haven't seen one in person yet. with spydercos pretty is as pretty does, they're not pretty but they cut great. later, ahgar
oh and by the way you're now addicted to knives and will be buying another very soon. probably spyderco. just relax and enjoy the ride.

Congrats on the Delica 4!! It is a great knife. I am a Spyderco fan myself. And this won't be your last Spyderco either!!! Hehehehehehe.

Carrying a Delica lately too - the waved D4. I love this knife! I used to carry an Endura wave, but I got an inside job and my cutting jobs got smaller. I also scared a few suits when I pulled out a 4" bladed knife to open a box.

I have grown to love the D4 more than it's predecessors. I love that they increased the handle size as it now fits my hand perfectly.

Great purchase - My current favorite knife!!

Just FYI, you're not allowed to take ANY knife/weapon with you to basic training. When I went through Benning they broke the little knife blade off my toenail clippers during processing. Granted that was in 1992, but I doubt much has changed.
Good luck in RIP, Huah!

Glad you like the Delica, but just be careful about the legalities of this knife. For some suspicious reason, Spyderco added just enough length on this knife (the first time in the Delica series) to make the overall length just barely over 7". There are ordinances that prohibit carrying knives over 7" in length in some places. That's why, after so many years of buying the Delica, I will not by another one until the length comes back down.

Hi Razorsdescent,

Thanx for the review, support and kind words. We appreicate you're taking the time to report. We hope the Delica "grows on you".

Take care of yourself out there. There are some really "bad guys" in this conflict.

sal

Dont take a knife to basic, at least when i did it got dumped on the tarmac by a drill sgt. They asked if anyone had contraband items such as yadda yaddda yadda....knives...doh!

So i wouldnt take any to basic if i were you.
