Today i bought a spyderco delica 4.
This was my first spyderco proper. I had a spyderfly and lost it about 7 months ago. Never really even looked for it or considered it much of a loss (unlike my combat karambit which has been MIA for a little over 2 months and i still look for it everyday, cause i love it
). The design on it just never seemed all that good and it kinda put me off spydercos.
As i prepare to go into the military (i leave the 19th) as i recently catalogued all my knives. I realized that the cheapest knife i own cost me over 100 dollars. Also as i draw near my enlistment i get increasingly paranoid of legal trouble (i signeds up for the R.I.P contract and if you get into any legal trouble you can forget it, espeacially after that stunt those rangers pulled robbign a bank). So all of my knives were either illegal, "tactical" or to expensive for me to carry.
Even though i ship the 19th i decided that i should get a knife to edc. Its less than a month but hey i feel naked without a knife, and of course its well another knife
.
So i set a limit on how much to spend and went to the local surplus store. For some reasons surplus stroes seem to peddle mostly crap :barf:. So my options were fairly limited. It finally drew down to either a kabar TDI or a delica 4, I decided what the heck and bought the delica. A delica 4 with partial serrations FRN handles and v8-10 steel. THey couldnt even find the box for it so i carried it out of the store clipped to my pocket.
MY first concern with buying an FRN handled spyderco was that the handle would be too light to do a "chicago drop style opening". I was pleasantly surprised to discover the embeded liners. It provides just the right amount of weight to preform a chicago drop opening while the spyderhole proved to give a great grip while opening. this was a double positive for me:thumbup:
The blade was shave sharp right out of the store and has a great geometry to it. Sal is a designing genius. The knives are not aestetichally appealing but it cuts great.
The pocket clip is sturdy and well thought out, and the FRN is grippywhile not being uncomfortable.
THe lock-up is tight and there is NO BLADE PLAY
For its size this knife is alot togher than its appearance and name implies. The action is alsop incredibly smooth for a lock back knife.
Even though this knife has only been in my pocket for about 8 hours it has already really grown on me. It is a very well thought out knife.
My only gripe is its small size but they didnt have an endura and it does make it more sheeple freindly so no gripe there
Now this is where im going to go off on a tangent so if you dont like tangents you can stop now:
The thing i find so great about this knife is its functionality. Benchmade really appears to have fallen off in this regards. BM seems to be the exact opposite of spyderco. Great, well thought out bali's, and not sogreat folders ( with some exceptions like the rukus, and skirmish)
Benchmades aproach to knife making appears to be veering more into aestetichs of their knives rather than there functionality. Which makes sptdercos so refreshing to me. They are very functional cutting tools and are designed as such. There is nothing on this knife that shouldn't be there. Its not flashy and its not something that i feel will be scratched up easily, or that ill preticuraly mind when i do scratch it up. Its a great user. Benchmade could take a que on its folder designs from sal and his staff
That was alot longer than i expected.
All around a great knife. If you dont already have a spyderco get one. If you do buy another.
