Got a free benchmade 940 today, but don't know what to do with it

Ok, so one of my old friends called me over today to help her sharpen her kitchen knives. We had been talking about knives and she mentioned she had a whole bag of knives that her dad and ex had bought at swap meets and what not. I kind of knew it was going to be a big bag of junk, and it was, except for one little gem...there in the midst of all the crap was a benchmade 940 Osborne. She told me I was welcome to it, so I left with a leatherman, 2 sak, and a bm 940. I told her what the knives were worth but she was uninterested and told me to take whatever I wanted. Nice friend! Nice day!

Problem is, the benchmade is pretty beat. Half the pivot screw is missing, there is some rust on the blade, the edge is pretty mangled...the knife is just pretty beat up. So, what I'm wondering is if its worth sending it to benchmade to have them refurbish it or something. I live outside of the USA, so it's hard to just order parts (like pivot screw). I'm heading stateside next month so I could send it to bm then and have a buddy bring it to me when he visits for Christmas. So does anyone know if benchmade would be willing to refurbish the knife? How much they would charge? I'm just trying to decide if its even worth dealing with. I honestly doubt i would use it for much. I'm not really that into the design at all, so I'd kind of just be doing it because its a nice knife and a friend gave it to me. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Lance

Last time I did a blade swap (CE to PE) Benchmade charged $35.00. The other stuff shouldn't be that much, I'd simply email their Customer Service (link is on their website), and they'll get back to you within a days time. Overall, they should be able to fix it up for you rather nicely. I've seen some crazy before and after pics of their CS workforce, and great feedback over the years.

Ok, I guess I'll sent it to them when I get home. Like I said, the design doesn't really do it for me, but if I can come out of this with a refurbished 940 for $35 I'd be a fool not to send it to them. I've heard great things about their customer service, so it's probably worth it just to see what they can do with it.

Send it in to get repaired, it will serve you well. If not consider it a well made work knife after the repairs for all those chores you don't want to subject your other knives to.

I'd say you got 3 gems and a crown jewel. Sweet!

Cook her a good thank you dinner with your next haul.
