I was given a motor today by a friend that I just recently found out makes knives. I have known him through sailing for years, but for some reason never knew he was into making knives. Anyways he works for the local commuter train yard, BART, and comes across electric motors all the time, so he offered one to me as well as a section of rail to pound on. The motor is a dayton, 1hp, single phase, 115/230V, 3450rpm and has a 5/8" shaft. He said when he got it, it ran fine but it has been siting on the shelf for a few years.

Well now I need to figure out what kind of steel ruining machine I want to make it run. I am on a tight budget (almost zero) and prefer to try scrap/homemade type projects rather than just buying. I am thinking a disk sander would be cheapest, but am not ruling out a 2x72 grinder.

Suggestions? Advise? Got parts I need? Let me know.

Wrap some sandpaper around the shaft and go at it. lol I am thinking of setting up a disk sander too.

I would go KMG / NWG grinder with pulleys for varispeed

234
432
or similar pulley combo

and a 3" drive wheel to keep your top belt speed down

Well I went and looked at some various sites about th NWG. Seems like this might be a little far out of my budget at the moment. I know this motor is far from ideal, but I like the idea of a disc sander. Does anyone have any pics of a disc sander running on step pullies? I could set it up this way while I salvage steel and other items for a 2x72 then switch the motor and start saving for a DC motor. I just want to get this thing up and running!
