Well, I don't exactly have it here yet, but it shant be long.

I was thinking that my knife collection really didn't have anything I really wanted to pass down to my son, so I got to looking. Well, I looked at PhilL's Photopoint site one day and saw a knife by J.A. Lonewolf. The damascus was striking, and the lines were beautiful, so I get to talking to Phil about a design that I liked and things just kinda snowballed from there. Here is a pic here:

The scrim is symbolic of me and my son, and hopefully it will signify his son in the future as well. It is an heirloom piece that is for him. (Course he's gonna have to let me use it for a few years til his hands get a bit bigger

Thanx a heap to Phil and Stab1 for getting this done for me. The piece is far better in real life even than it was in my imagination.
Sorry bout the editing, this is my first attempt at showing a pic.

Striking package! The handle (ivory?), scrimshaw, damascus and guard/pin combination is perfect. Proper motivation as well. Congrats.

Vel, I'm glad I could help, but I am sorry you didn't get to skin a deer with it this year. My first two custom made knives were from Lonewolf and my drawings, so when you asked could he make this knife for you even though there was nothing like it on my PhotoPoint site, I knew that he could.

Please, give us a review of the knife when you get it in your hands, I wish I could see those pins better. This is a special knife because we already know it's future, it was designed to be used and handed down to your son, That's perfect.

More Lonewolf

Vel,

All I can say is you are very lucky I decided to ship it after I took the pix.

Hey Vel, what's the story you have to have the knife by now?
How about a review, good, bad or indifferent?

BTW, I've been told Lonewolf doesn't want to make another one like yours, so I guess you have a true one of a kind.

Ahhh yes...Sorry PhilL. Been busy playin' around with 'er ya know.

Well, she is here. I am firmly convinced that pictures on a computer screen will NEVER do a knife justice. Even the excellent pics that stab1 provided just don't do the knife credit.

To start, the blade is random twist damascus of 1095, L6, and nickel thrown in for highlights. The guard is stainless steel, and the scales are ivory Micarta. The pics actually make the handle appear white, but in person, the ivory color is true. The scrim is beyond my expectation as well, exactly what I wanted and beautifully done. A couple of nice touches that Lonewolf added are decorated pins and filework along the spine. The fit and finish are excellent, and the whole piece is a pleasure to behold.

The knife came to me shaving sharp, so I decided to dig right in. The holiday season provided plenty of cutting chores. I sliced up some steaks for a stew, made short work of alot of turkey, cleaned 2 limits of razor clams, sharpened a couple of weenie sticks (not that I was going to need them, just figgered to be a good chore for a hunting knife), sliced a couple of bagels and added cream cheese to same.

Now, this may not seem like alot of work for a knife, but you must understand... the holidays keep a guy pretty busy, and I've only had it for a few days. I hope to need it in the upcoming elk season so that I can give you a true review of the knife in it's designed capacity. But on with the story:

Lonewolf is definitely a hunter himself. He must be to get a knife to feel like this one feels in the hand. The full tang knife has a balance point right behind the forefinger (just about that first pin there). The width fits perfectly when your fingers are in their natural curled position. That may not make any sense to you, but that's how I'm gonna describe it.

When getting down and using hard, my thumb slides naturally up the micarta to rest on the filework right in front of the guard, and when I ease off, it slides right back where it started. Kinda like shifting gears in your car without realizing that you did it, very smooth and natural transition. A quick wipe across the pants and the blade looks good as new, and still shaves hair. As I said, I hope I can do an entire elk soon so as to give you a real performance review, but she is a performer; beyond a doubt.

The leather pouch sheath not only looks good, it holds the knife securely and rides a belt snugly on the hip without flapping around in an annoying fashion like some of the rigs I have worn. The wolf tracks across the leather still make me smile.

A sweet looking piece that begs to be used is a bona fide pleasure, make no mistake. Don't tell Lonewolf, but I'd have paid twice what I did to get this knife home. Hope to add more later. Oh, and thanx PhilL for reminding me.

Vel,

Gee, almost sounds like you are happy with the knife. If you really feel the need you can always send the extra $$$ to me. I think you have the address.

Lonewolf forges his Damascus billets, then takes two blade size pieces and forges them together and while hot twists them to get the dramatic patterns he produces. This also serves to make a Damascus blade that will stand up to hard use. I think you will be very happy with it as a user and it will give you a lifetime of pleasure.

Vel,
Beautiful knife! I was startled yet happy to see it is a user too

I like to just handle and look at my knives as much as the rest of you knife knuts, but I really enjoy putting them to work too.

Vel, sounds like a glowing review and I'm not surprised.

I do have one last question, what did your son say when he saw the knife, when he knows it's going to be his one day?

Vel-This is one of the most stunning knives
i have ever seen! For your son it will
be a priceless possession.Enjoy!
