Got a piece of history?

Knives that are special to me are knives that I didn't buy.

My dad gave me the Gerber AR
My aunt gave me the Wave
My Uncle gave me a SAK Explorer, and my grandfather gave me the other.
My Grandfather also gave me a Victorinox from god knows when.

No Pics yet, but I'll get some :)

My "special" knife is a "Vampire-in-Coffin" folder that my son bought for me as a Christmas present with his own money from Franklin Mint the year I started collecting knives. The rest of my knives are customs and are just "expensive" knives.

My "piece of history" knife is a gorgeous Rob Brown (S.Africa) boot knife that has handles made from the wood cannon barrel mounts of a Spanish galleon that capsized near the village where he lives.

my SA dagger my dad brought back from WW2, and my Gerber Mark 2 i carried in the army

A bayonet that my Uncle liberated from an Italian soldier in Nth Africa in WW2.

My first knife, gift from my grandfather, was a sheffield slipjoint, made in the early 50s.

My father gave me his old slipjoint, that he bought 30+yrs ago.

I've got a slipjoint here that was purchased right before they changed the laws for carry in the UK. Now if I could only figure out what year that was I'd know something else about it.

My "history piece" is a Randall #14 that my father gave to me 2 hours before I departed for Saudi Arabia in 1993. See, I had ordered it 8 months before I even knew I was being deployed. I had told my dad about the knife and how much I looked forward to getting it. Well, I found out I was going over seas 6 weeks before I was to actually leave. In that time my father contacted Randall and told them I was leaving and if they could finish it up before I left so I would have it. They said no problem. 3 weeks go by and I'm told I'm leaving the following week. I figure no Randall, no problem. I had the SRK my wife gave me. So I pack my bags, get everything in order and when I'm at the airport I spot my mom and dad waiting for me to see me off. We greet each other and then my dad hands me a box. I knew exactly what it was. Inside was my Model #14. My dad payed the balance on it and had it shipped overnite. Randall had finished the knife 3 days earlier. My dad also had my name engraved on it. I carried that knife everywhere in Saudi and I was hte envy of my unit. I retired the knife when I returned home.

Mine is a knife that my grandfather made. Back in 1947 he worked at 3M as a janitor, but was teaching himself to be a machinist. His first project was this knife. Since then this knife has cleaned deer, elk and moose. He gave the knife to me for XMAS 2 years ago.

PAL RH36
My dad carried it in the Army before WWII.
He was discharged at about the time the war broke out. So he enlisted in the Marines. He carried it through the war & I got it many years ago . Shaving sharp & holds a great edge. This is like a K-bar fixed blade that many carried. Quite the tool..

My Grandpa gave me the knife he carried in WWII just a couple weeks ago. Its a Cattaraugus Quartermaster's Knife, basically a beefy Kabar :) Same blade shape and length, but almost 1/4" stock and it has a steel gaurd and steel 3/8" thick, 1" wide pommel for hammering with.
I've got it all cleaned up and am planning on making a display case to hang it on the wall.

My Grandfather's first year Marble's Woodcraft. A couple years ago I had Marble's regrind the blade to repair the 1/8" broken off the tip. The knife looks like a new blade with a >85 yr. old leather handle and stag pommel. I still remember him using it to cut the heads off bullhead we caught with bamboo poles. The knife is literally priceless to me.

Congrats on your new acquisitions, Owen. I would tell you to treasure them but I think you have already figured that out. ;)

my special knife is one that has been in my family since the early 1700's it makes sense that I am a knife nut cause the family crest is carved into the handle of this blade. It is a bone handle and the top of the handle is of two horses drinking..the rest is a carving of the family crest and history..it dates from back in the 1600s. the blade has been changed several times and my grandfather used/abused it in his tool shed for years..those Dutch..not a sentimental lot..anyway the knife is carved in such a way that there is still a loose ball of bone underneath the horses feet..

LOL... What happened Ren?

Nothing much for old knives here. For years the only decent knife I had as a kid was a Victorinox - I think it was similar to a Hiker or Camper - the one with the saw blade - that I found on the ground at the end of a Cub Scout camp. Someone had broken the tips off of every blade!!! Oh well. I used it for probably 6-8 years. I still have it. After a couple of years one side fell off so I was going around with a tip-less scale-less SAK... And I abused the hell out of that poor thing. I'm surpised it's still in one(or two rather) piece, but it's still going.

On the other hand, when I was a little tot I had a horrible habit of grabbing my dad's Buck 110 and attacking the furniture :D
I think that's when I learned how to run and hide in the attic for a while :D
