well, have a lot of em i guess. but this ones with my drill press.

its doesnt drill round holes.

and that sucks. its a Ryobi table top. i like it except for the problem.

should i take it back to home depot?

should i get a new spindle/chuck? (will that fix it?)

buy a better/differnt spindle?

i also want to be able to use small wire size bits too #55 etc...will i need a new spindle/chuck anyhow?

thanks

I would definitely take it back to store, guy. I would not put any more money into a machine that is not performing when it is a new machine. You are just going to have more trouble with it, trust me.

there could be a lot of things to make it not work properly, the primary one being the chuck not being put on straight. I would take it off-you will need some sort of tapered device to pull it off the spindle, and then open it up all the way on the bottom, put the table up close to the spindle, and press the chuck on with the drill press handle, you should use an indicator to see if it is spinning off center first, not the chuck but a large drill bit in the chuck

I would also suggest that you try starting all your holes with a center drill and then drilling the holes, and dont go straight to a big bit, work up to it.
the Jacobs chucks are pretty good, but not cheap, the really good chucks are not worth buying and putting on that tiny machine.

With the drilling I assume you use a center punch to get the drill to start tracking without wobble.

The second thing is the drill a new one or re sharpened if sharpened off center it can drill over size.

After that the speed and presure when drilling need to be right.

with the chuck my mate has a smaller chuck with parrallel shaft. He puts it in the bigger chuck for the fine drill bits.

Try to work out if it is drilling technique or the machine causing the the problem. if it is the machine take it back and get what you paid for.

ok, took it back. buddy of mine gave me a pretty good deal on the next higher up one (stand alone Rigid floor model)

anyhow, this one is MUCH better. but there is still a small amount of movement in the tip of the bit. maybe im just really picky?

could i be setting/pressing in the chuck wrong? can you remove it and try again? how?

thanks

SkaerE, when you're chucking up the bit, are you using each hole in the chuck to tighten it a little at a time or are you just sticking the key in one hole and reafing it down? If you do the latter the bit won't be centered and will wobble. Also, with smaller bits, chuck em up deep and use light pressure and back them out several time per hole so the debris doesn't jam up the spirals. That will make the bit cut less efficiently and also create alot of heat. Simple things but handy to know.
