I was on the lookout for a nice mechanical pencil, and while looking for a belt-grinder, I found some Rotring Newton's on sale for around $15 a piece. These are silver, with a gold tip and gold cap, and a red accent under the cap. Very nice looking! I bought it, opened the box, and found the original price tag. 5000 yen  (something like $45). Usually everything goes for retail, or above retail in Japan, so I think I got a pretty good deal. It's very nicely balanced, right at the crook of the hand, and it's solidly constructed. It also has a cool dual stage clicking mechanism which allows the pencil "nib" to be retracted into the body.

Oh yeah, I also saw some flashlights, a *bunch* of them, this place basically had the full SureFure lineup, Streamlights, CMGs, Inovas, Photons, you name it, they probably had it. But the mark-up was crazy! The E2e-HA was going for $145 or so, while the G2 was going for $75 (*!!!* I could buy three of them from the States, for that kind of money). But the upside is I got to handle everything. The E2e is way smaller than I imagined, and the E1e is simply tiny.

They also had some knives, so I got to handle my first Spyderco, a Merlin. Solid lock-up, nice finish. Also got to see some Alox SAKs, which were very nice. I see one in my EDC in the future, if I can get over the loss of the toothpick and tweezers. It feels very nice, though.

Also got a Victorinox paring knife. This has an extremely thin edge profile, should be wonderful to work with.

Anyway, yeah. The hardware store is to me now what Toys 'R Us was when I was 5. Except more fun. :D

Glad to hear it. Rotring is my favorite brand of pen. I just ordered a new Freeway fountain pen from them last week and I'm going to pick it up in a day or two. But anyway, enjoy your new pencil!

Nice! Rotring makes a nice quality product. It will last you forever.

I've heard the Rotring 600 series offers physically heavy, weighty pens that are works of art -- and can almost be used as truncheons in emergencies. I love pens that are built like tanks. Is the Rotring such a quality pen?

I handled a Rotring 600 series rollerball, and it was *solid*. Very weighty. It think you could safely beat someone over the head with it.

Also, look at the Levenger LS3. Same type of serious heavy duty construction.

Thank you. I got tired of the disposable pens that are so light you feel though you're holding a plastic tube of air rather than a quality writing instrument. I already have two pens from the Retro 1951 Tornado series. Love them both.
