Nice rifle! They are amazingly accurate and easy to take care of. I have a SKS Para and a regular one and I am always amazed at how accurate they are with just plain old open sights.

great rifles, i too have a norinco para, i bought it back in the late '80s IIRC, paid less than $100 for it which is what they went for then, i can see why the soviets adopted the AK though, but all in all the SKS isnt bad.

7.62x39mm which is .30 cal. The ballistics are almost indentical to the 30-30 Winchester. They are very easy rounds to reload and you can use a good assortment of .30 cal bullets for different trajectories. Here in WA state you can deer hunt with them as long as you are not using the military ball ammo. The 130 grain Nosler bullets worked real well back when I loaded them.

I completely retro fitted my para trooper with a synthetic folding stock, 30 round clip, IDF scope, tritium sights and a flash suppresor. It was cheaper to buy the surplus ball ammo then reloading it for plinking.

Congrats on a nice rifle!

I've got a Yugo and a Norinco Sporter which I traded the AK clone I had in order to get. I like the SKS platform better :)

why???

not that the SKS is bad, i just very much prefer my AKMs to my SKS.

better ergos, looks, higher mag capacity, mags change easier, just a better platform all in all imho, hard to argue with the success AKs have had thru the yrs.

but again the SKS isnt a bad one.

SIFU1A: Ergos. And personal preferance; I could never get a decent sight picture with the AKM without craning my neck in a most uncomfortable way. It was also a Century built job & had a 'canting problem'.

The SKS is far more comfortable for me to shoot accurately (IOW using the sights LOL). Especially in the sporter stock - but then my Yugo is a comfortable shooter as is. Anyway, the SKS sporter accepts & feeds AK mags at least as well if not a little better than the Century AKM did. Long story short, I got a 'bad one' when I picked up the AK - and I really liked the SKS sporter.

Aside from thier low cyclic rate and very short stock they are a great bang for the buck. They are a piece of firearms history that anyone can afford. Both of mine were brand new and cost less the $100. The ball ammo is also very affordable. I am not the greatest at regular gun cleaning but at least with the SKS's it fast and easy.

The Isreali's and Soviets made some great weapons. Low cost, simple to operate and very dependable. Just a couple days ago I saw some footage of our local Stryker Brigade over Mosul involved in a shootout. Most of them were using AK's and there were a couple Barret .50 cals. They did not say why they were using them but I have my own suspicions.

One of the best value's in rifles but I thought you yanks could not buy chinese rifles. The Norinco M305(semi M14 clone) is another awesome deal and 308 to boot.

I would guess the reason for using an AK in a Stryker is the folding stock is better in cramped conditions and the noise does not draw fire like the M4 does.

Nice. My dad bought me an SKS a few years back, and I loved it. Shoots great, comfortable, all around great gun.

whatcha mean "low cyclic rate" everything we are speaking of is semi auto, which is low i suppose lol.

as far as the stryker Bgd using AKMs i think ya are confusing US troops with iraqi police/army AFAIK all US troops pack a M16 or M4, not AKMs. oh maybe the occasional SEAL or delta guy might pack a AKM or AK74, but thats a exception not the rule.

i dont think there officers would allow that lol.

oh, ok, i can undersdtand that, an SKS that accepts AK mags would be better, mine is the type that has a 10 round non detachable, or not easily detached anyway, lol,

FWIW they do make AK stocks that are 1" or so longer pull, might would help ya.

century probably isnt the best AK, i have a maahdi and a romanian and have nevr had a problem at all, zero.

Not to detract from Bladeforums, but I do believe there is a forum completely dedicated to the SKS. I imagine a person could find out everything there is to know about the SKS, aftermarket bits, ammo...you know, the whole shebang.

Norinco has some pretty rough exterior and moving parts. However their barrels of recent are very accurate and with some cleaning up the SKS is potentially a great medium power rifle for hunting and survival.

I never liked the AK47 and it's immediate derivatives. They had good fire power and reliability but requires skill to achieve reasonable accuracy. In African conflicts they were rarely used by trained personell. However. traditionally used by several guys in close quarters, often ambush, gained it an excellent reputation. In small groups and open ground it was very out classed by most other military arms. In the African Conflicts the better captured AKs were selected and the others were rebarrelled in the same calibre, for Pseudo opps. European and South African firearms based on the same mechanism either in 7.62X39 or .223 gave the best of reliability and usability.

my 2c

30-30 has the upper hand on 7.62x39. Also the bullet selection for 30-30 is much better since 30-30 is .308 diameter and 7.62x39 is .311 diameter so for the best acuracy reload with .311 bullets. Also my 30-30 handloads shoot a 125 grn PSP bullets at over 2600 fps where the 125 grn 7.62x39 at best are 2400 fps but the sks and ak-47 are great I own 7 all together. Nice job on the score I just wished I could get them fo less than $100.00 new like I got my 5 sks's

No, it was US troops using AK's during a urban firefight. They were the stryker brigade right out of Fort Lewis.

The SKS does not have a very fast semi-auto rate when compared to other rifles in that category. It's bolt is very heavy so it travels a bit slower.

I never noticed any change in accuracy using .308 but I also never chronographed the velocity either. I am sure the .311 allowed less gas pass around thus adding an increase to muzzle velocity. Also considering a longer barrel length in a 30-30 vs an SKS. My para has even a shorter barrel so that would lower the muzzle veloc even more.

i can guarantee you the stryker brigade uses M16s, you are not right on this believe me.

the US army does not issue the AK47, or the AK74 either.

you have either confused the iraqi police/army with US troops due to the old desert storm style camo fatigues, ya saw private security contractors, which aslo carry the AKM, sometimes, the folks ya saw were haji (insurgents) or ya flat misidentified the rifle.

the US army carries M16's or M4s.

FWIW the term "cyclic rate" indicates a full auto weapons rate of fire, ie how many rounds it will fire in a minute, theoretically, since if its 600 RPM obviously a mag change is in there somewhere, i have never in my entire life heard anyone use the term "cyclic rate" in reference to a semi auto.

anyway wouldnta semi autos "cyclic rate" be determined by the operator ie how fast does his finger work??

now ya are getting me confused lol.

One of my SKS's is a para. Isnt amazing the amount of noise and barrel flame just a few inches makes?
