Here was my ad posted in the Trade: Knives & Tools forum...

"Up for trade is a new Paramilitary 2. Just received this on this exchange and its new but has no box.

This is the regular black G-10 version with CPM-S30V blade. These are tough to find and mostly sold out if you've been looking for one.

All offers considered but not interested in multiple cheepos for it. Straight up or small cash either way is desired.

PM or email works best. Thanks for looking."

I come back later tonight and see a Mod issues me a warning and had edited my ad by dropping this line out....."Straight up or small cash either way is desired."
Hmmm??? I wished to trade my knife straight up for anothers....or exchange knives and add a small amount of money either way depending on the knives. Not all traded knives on here are EXACTLY swapped straight up.

Now, I do the best I can to follow the rules and keep up with them tho they be a' changing alot...and as far as I can tell this warning, since the edit removed that sentence was for mentioning the word CASH. ????

Is that how I am to interpret this? I'm aware of the "No Selling" in the Trade forums. I never offered to sell my knife.(although one member ASKED if Id sell it.)

I also didnt place a cash value in this ad. I insinuated that the members items to be traded be equal in value(thus the STRAIGHT UP request)
OR...there could be a small (note the word SMALL) cash outlay either way to equal it out.

I see THAT all the time and dont see anything in the rules that its forbidden. Alot of times people will trade knives with one party tossing in a $20(or more) to make it good and even.

If.......thats a problem then it should be stated clearly in the forum rules.

I at no time offered to sell my knife outright.
I at no time placed a trade value on the knife.

So tell me, if someone can, what rule was broken?

I gotta tell ya, I like it here, and I do alot of exchanges(correctly I thought) but this seems rather petty and almost like some are looking for any gray area to toss a warning out and frankly I agree with several long time members who also feel the Rules Police are a little too vigorous.

Where did I err????

Don't know but I never saw a member win an argument with a mod though, might as well drop it.

Well...that might be the easy route and I'm sure you're correct but I've read that new RULES section many times so that I may continue to buy/sell/trade as I wish and be a contributing member on other areas of this site.

But frankly....Id like to know what the hell I did exactly because Im not seeing it.

Maybe he misinterpreted the "straight up" part as selling it outright? I don't know.

The straight up cash part was what got you in trouble. They way it was posted, one could interpret you were trying to sell in the trade forums. Wording your intention more clearly may have saved you from the warning, but after all, it is only a warning....so don't worry about it. Just as you are not allowed to post Trade Values, you are not allowed to sell for cash. If you want to accept cash or trades, you must post in the for sale forums with the heading "For Sale or Trade"

No selling in the trades forum, period. That's not what it's there for, and when we let gold members do it, we get problems with the registered users who see that and think they can do the same. If you want to sell it, list it in the right forum. It's not a "For Sale or Trade" forum, it's a Trade forum.

You got a warning for doing it wrong, leave it at that. I'll spell it out explicitly in the rules, but really this should be common sense.

It was just interpreted wrong IMO. It's clear to me you weren't selling but "straight up or with some cash either way" would have been clearer. I got dinged for something similar at one time but like Brennanscott says, the Mods always win so try not to sweat it and you'll be fine. You're a good member here so it's not like you have to worry about a lot of infractions adding up. When does it expire?

I'm surprised there was any confusion.

I fully realize we're not allowed to sell for cash in the Trade forum. I never said that I would accept cash for the knife. I wanted a staright trade or a close trade with some cash either way to balance it.

Seemed pretty clear to me what my ad said and what it meant...evidently not so....for at least one Mod.

But answer this if possible. Is THAT an OK request in a Trade forum? I see it all the time and I see no reason why it'd be prohibited.

Seriously...what are we trying to do here? Providing a place for members to swap knives and a little cash added in no way soils that transaction or the site.

We're pretty flexible. Next time just phrase it better.

It is common sense.

I DIDNT want to sell it.

I DIDN't offer to sell it.

I DIDN'T offer to trade OR sell it.

I offered to trade it straight up or trade it with some small cash outlay either way.

**OK....yes. I will try and phrase it better.

I see where the confusion is, obviously, it could be misinterpreted, I don't know how severe a "warning" is, but I think just a simple re phrasing and clarifying should be allowed and the warning removed. Obviously you were not trying to break or bend a rule, so no one needs to go to Internet jail over ones accent when typing. Of course it is the internet, draconiism is the law of the land. Best of luck on your efforts!

A warning carrys no points against your membership and expires a couple weeks after being given. Lesson learned, move on.

Hi NDJeep -

I don't think anyone is trying to lecture you - please don't let this spiral out of control.

I believe if you want to trade an item, and you are willing to add cash for items that are deemed more valuable than your item OR take a little cash with a traded item for your item if the traded item is not up to the agreed value of your item, that is also acceptable.

I don't think it is worth getting frustrated or upset about.

It may be simple semantics, but trust me - dealing with the public on a forum is a thankless job, and the admin/mods rarely have time to deal with issues on a personal basis.

I enjoy your posting here - please take this as a friendly reminder rather than an affront - I am not intending to offend you, just offer a little observation.

best regards -

In my thread Title I asked for Clarification.

That has been given....and thanks for some of the kind words.

We're good to go.

Just remember, the Mods have a lot to deal with so they aren't always going to read things 3 and 4 times to try to figure out the intended meaning. Especially if someone else read it wrong and reported the thread.
I know how frustrating it feels to get a warning when you're trying to follow the rules but mistakes happen. Hopefully it's all good :)

Sounds like you got it squared away, good thing I didn't offer my worthless assistance as I thought maybe the warning was due to not putting a trade value?
