Got all three LE tweeners -- my unofficial critique

Yeah, like I'm some kind of expert...;)

The box arrived about an hour ago. Of course, I had to open all three and fondle.

First impression: I didn't get a signature box. Second impression: A gorilla (maybe the 800-lb one?) at SMKW jammed the KaBar/Becker box carrying the BK16S into the shipping box and tore a corner. Normally not a big deal, but these are billed as "collectors" items!

Scales. Have to say I'm disappointed. Ethan said in the TV video that they felt nice in his hand. Eh... The trademark of a Becker is a handle that fills your hand -- and then some. My hands aren't that big, and the knife felt lost in my grip. I definitely will be making some spacers out of scrap Kydex. I took the brown additional scales out of the official Ziplock bag and examined them. Small, but very obvious, mould flashing around the entire perimeter. Say what? The surfaces that mount toward the knife grip look like the scales were poured into a mould and left to harden with that surface upright in the open; wavy, not flat like they would be against the wall of a mould. I put the two halves together in the position they would be on the knife and you can see lots of light peaking around the mounting surfaces. They aren't flat -- they rock (and not in the good way). The three screws will probably pull them up tight against the knife, but you would never see this kind of thing on a Grivory scale on a BK7 or 2 or 9. In general, scales aren't up to usual Becker standards.

Edge. Looks "rushed". Very large included angle, ground with a very coarse stone. Not centered. Especially near the point the edge is much wider on one side than the other, visible by eye. I tried cutting a piece of 8 x 11 copy paper with the BK-16 and it just glanced off. Bad. Correctable, of course, but for $75 you should be able to cut a piece of paper out of the box, even if it leaves a ragged edge.

On the MiniMag (15) along the spine forward from the roll stamping was obvious dirt and debris that was caught under the black coating. On a "collector" edition...:grumpy:

Different models:Really subjective stuff here. All just my opinion, of course. Grip in my dominant hand and look down, then figure which looks/feels the best. I gotta say for me the order of preference - best to worse - would be the MiniMag(15), the clip point (17), and a distant third would be the drop point (16).

There ya have it. Maybe the big failing is in trying to make a collector edition out of the "Knives That Work." Silk purse our of a sow's ear -- kind of thing. Nothing I complained about (well, other than the sharpness) would bother a "working" knife. It's just that I know Beckers, and the ones I got don't live up to the old standard.

Good write up, K9, very informative.

We take the good and the bad here, and it sounds like those Collector's Edition might not be so on par with what they were listed as.

Well,

A well done review and a well done response by Mr Moose.

To look at the review point by point..

1) Any knife handle will feel "inadequate" compared to the orgional full sized BK knives.. I have not even handled a Tweener yet, but I do expect them to feel quite a bit smaller than the regular Beckers.

2) The Handle fit and finish is probably due to the fact that I do believe the new Zytel handles are NOT source by the same supplier that made the Grivory handles in the past? Teething problems are to be expected..

3) The edge edge bevel on most sub $100factory knives is very inconsistent at best - including the Kabars. If factories could spend the time putting in the handwork, all factory knives would come with razor sharp, beatufully polished edge bevels. 99% of them do not.

4) Not ONE complaint about the sheaths? WTF is up with THAT..??:D

"I took the brown additional scales out of the official Ziplock bag..."

That's funny, I thought the same thing when I opened mine yesterday... I was looking for breadcrumbs in the ziplock.

Becker Ziplocks Work for a Living

Thanks for the review K9. It's good to hear from non-Beckerheads since we can be a little biased sometimes (not me of course, but ya know, some people :D)

I too noticed that the fit on my coyote brown scales was not quite perfect. I've always had to monkey with it a bit when attaching new scales, but these were just a bit off. Like you said though, not enough to bother a "working knife".

I think some of this may be unmet expectations. Kabar didn't originally manufacture these to be display pieces, so the collector aspect comes from the scarcity since they are the only roll stamped versions of these knives to be produced.

Sorry K-9 but I am going to hijack your post!! I didn't want to start another thread about these so I am going to jump on yours..
I got all three tweeners also. And I really like them. The sheath is way better and seems more functional. Not sure on the peanut butter grips yet:cool:

I LIKE!!!!

As far as the grinds being a little rough....isn't that to be expected being as that they are just protos?

Alright, Jim, you owe me some stitches. I tore some inside, I think. :D:D:D:D:D

Moose

Moose, you have made me chuckle a bit in the past yourownself.. Payback is a real Beeotch..:D Besides, what is a Becker thread without a bit of Snark?

Now some post script to my first post-

MY first two tweeners just arrived !!!!!!!!

Just got to handle them and give them a look see before going back into the salt mines..

1)Sheaths are SUBERB. Spec Ops quality, IMHO. Very ,very nice. About the only modification is that I would make one of the knife retaining straps removable for those of use who are not Jumping out of planes.;)

2)Yes- the handles are a bit small. Some liners or thicker slabs will solve that. I will be working on that shortly.

3) I actually LIKE the Etching and Ethan's signature on it. He deserves it, and the knife is a piece of History and a long time in coming. They deserve a bit of pomp and circumstance. I like it!!

4) BOTH of mine cut paper just fine. They are OBVIOUSLY defective and must be returned to the factory for a good dulling...

5) While I am impressed with the handling of the BK17 as expected, the BK16 Drop point is a trimmer blade than it looks in the pics. The horse race for which is the better Tweener is neck and neck IMHO, and the race will become VERY dicey once I get a BK15 and a Full height flat ground BK16.. The little BK17 Clip point is a sexy little beast, though.

6) Tomorrow I will be checking myself into the Betty Ford clinical for my knife collecting addiction..
The Tweeners just made me realize I have a "problem"..LOL

don't like the jump straps? there's an included tool with each sheath to remove them :) ;)

As far as the grinds being a little rough....isn't that to be expected being as that they are just protos?

I think they were manufactured with the intent of retail sale, so no special attention was given to grinds, etc... Just the normal QC.

Limited editions because all other will have laser etching instead of roll stamp.

Included in the box huh, I don't think the extra scales will properly cut the retention straps. I better find some aviation snips or something.

I think calling something "Limited Edition" and lazering the heck out of it kind of knocks it out of the "proto" category, don't ya think?

Speaking of straps... Anybody got a clue what those little butterfly loops are that are sewn on the back side of the belt flap?

My 16 was sharp right out of the box. It cut paper, 550 cord, and my neighbor's index finger (self-inflicted of course). I'm sorry that you are disappointed.

Good review. I'm a little disapointed that the knives dont come to as high a OOTB standard as I would like but I guess they're still protos. Thanks for the info.
